NFL injury update: QBs Ryan Tannehill and Matt Stafford in the spotlight

There’s a ton of injuries around the league, including several to playoff-ticketed quarterbacks, so let’s jump right into it:
Ryan Tannehill, Miami (sprained left knee)
A sprain is a tear. The biggest failure of my career is that, somehow, this is not yet understood. The simple fact is that any tearing of a ligament is a sprain, from the very minor (Grade I) to the very severe (Grade III). The word that most people misuse is “tear.” I think what they actually mean is “rupture,” a complete tearing of the ligament.
Enough with the syllogisms. What Tannehill has is a Grade II sprain of his ACL rather than a rupture, plus a Grade II sprain of his MCL. There’s no note of any meniscus issue, but those three tend to go together, so much so that there’s a name for it, O’Donoghue’s triad, or the terrible triad. Is the pair of sprains better or worse than what was expected for Tannehill after Sunday’s game? Maybe better. For now, Tannehill doesn’t head immediately to surgery. He has an injury and a return path very similar to what Robert Griffin III had a couple years ago in Washington, and we know how that turned out.
