Is the interview today? Come on Sparano finish the lunch
at Shula's steak house and offer the man the job!

They said the interview could happen today or tomorrow. They want to make a hire by the end of the week, so likely by Monday, we will have a new DC.

keeping my fingers crossed !

there are many scenerios either way in this thing.

but, i have to say, if its happening this quick, that the
trifecta wants a DC in place by monday, al groh is the
guy they are choosing.

i think they got him in and said hold off on the college gig,
we want you here but we need to do another interview
for pr purpouses after what transpired this year.

they will announce grohs hiring late friday night or saturday,
introduce him on monday and tell us all how they were real tempted
with butler, he was a real strong candidate but we just could not get
a deal done to the liking of both sides. yada-yada........

and this is SO sad because its just another old guy who was just fired,
has never really accomplished anything great [besides hanging on to
parcells apron strings in 1990, like mangini had done with billichek].

there are MANY great position coaches in the nfl who are bright, talented
and ready for there step up in the nfl. the dolphins DO NOT HAVE to make
this choice.

groh is old, he IS at retirement time even if he thinks he is not. he is NOT
an inovator like tom moore's offenses or dick lebeaue's defenses where
they are still productive at 95. groh is NOTHING more than a journeyman
coach with NOTHING more than what we have already seen from him.

he isnt in step with todays nfl players like what he was used to being
around in the late 80's, early 1990's. it was a HUGE factor for him not
winning in virginia. the young guys are just not going to connect with
him. he has NO big time pedigree on his own [inovative schemes, superbowl
wins, etc..] and was never a respected, long time nfl player.

keith butler is much younger and the younger guys coming out of college and
the ones already in the leauge will relate to him MUCH MORE than they will
moldy old al groh.

is the senior bowl important enough to stop searching for a great young
DC candidate who could be with us for YEARS and to hand the gig to a
worn out, lack luster old coach? coachin the senior bowl would be nice
but it is not the end all. i would rather take the time and find the RIGHT
DC candidate.

what sense is that? how does this better our team for the future?

al groh would be the most dissapointing move the finz could make, even
if they dont land butler. mainly because there ARE other guys out there.

SAY NO 2 AL GROH!!!

You are referencing, in the first sentence, NFL players. Then, in the next sentence you say this is why he lost while coaching at virginia.
?????

I want Butler too by the way, just had a hard time following your reasoning.

I am officially revising my pecking order of preferences:

#1-4: Butler
#5 Sleeper position coach from a blitzing D
#6: Bowles (now flipflopped with #7). Agree that he shouldn't be rewarded for his DB's poor performance, but compared to #7, at least he's young, with his own fresh ideas and receptivity to better schemes and utilization of his players.
#7: Groh: this would be like trading in our Brontosaurus for a Tyrannosaurus. Has he really been out of the NFL for 10 years??? As pointed out, even in his prime which he's long past, in NFL measurements, he's not been particularly impressive! Can he even relate to a 23 yo player??? Sheesh

ROCKY MTN:

i was saying that in the 80's and 90's when al was dragging on bills
tit, the nfl was a whole different animal. the tough defense and run
first offense with an occasional pass was in vogue.

thats not true today! and todays player, college and nfl, are not the
players from his "golden" years when parcells got him his superbowl
ring.

what does al groh have that todays young player can relate to or garner
respect for? like i said, he was not a big time former nfl player. he doesnt
have a plethora of superbowl wins and bsc championships under his belt.

there is NO al groh style defense or scheme related to his name.

i bet that if you were to ask, 90% of the players coming out of college this
year would have no idea who al groh even is. and i bet it 80% in the nfl!

the kids at virginia and there conference rivals knew him, but other than that,
not much. nick saban he is not!

so he comes in, no one knows about him. he rattles off his resume......

i won a ring with bill parcells as an assistant in 1990 [when most were just born].

i never played in the nfl.

i was fired from most of my jobs in the nfl and in college.

i have no bowl wins.

i have no championships or superbowls as a head coach.

he doesnt listen to hip-hop.

so, what are these young players coming out of college or in there
first few years in the nfl going to think about that? what will draw
them in to al groh world and make them sell out for him?

what does this say to the vets who may be here still like taylor
and peezy who still are hungry and wanting a ring, who have given
and given and suffered through lousy coaches and schemes and then
get al groh?

and like peezy or taylor or not, if they decide to keep them here, its
a huge factor!

so again, all i was saying is that back when al had his ONLY real
short success in the nfl under bill parcells, the players and game have
changed dramatically. all thats changed with groh is his hair is more
grey and he has been fired from more jobs.

Man, I thought Pat White had relatively small hands, but in that pic it looks like he could palm a giant pumpkin. Sweet. And why is Bell blocking for White?
:buddwalk:

I think you guys are being way to harsh on Al Gore. I voted for him for presidency in 2000, like many other U.S. citizens and I still believe he is a leader of men to this day.

:bong2:

But, I do agree with the majority here. Don't know much about either candidate, but a youth movement with innovative scheme ideas is what medicine our sickly defense needs. I love what the Steelers do with their blitzing and I'm sure Butler picked up some pretty great ideas from Dick Labeau. My pick is Butler all the way.

we could still hire both Butler and Groh. it's unlikely, but Groh could be assist. HC and some sort of defensive quality supervisor and Butler gets the DC job.

Didn't he once run on the slogan: "Tipper Canoe and Tyler Too?"

actually that's our beloved #34, and I was too lazy to find either new fingers or a new football. Asked and answered?

Fat Tony's gettin ready to F this up...I can just feel it! he's startin to resemble a shorter-fatter-Wannstache more 'n more each day...

Come on now, it hasn't even been 24 hours since he was listed as a candidate. Sparano hasn't done anything wrong.
