Anyone know how his Defenses have ranked throughout the years? Especially as a non head coach. I know he is known as a defensive mastermind but norv is called an o-mastermind and his offenses have never been good, let alone great IMO. I know he will be awesome so I am not saying he is bad, I was just curious b/c the texans d was average, but he had a lot more than just d to worry about there.

well he came up with blittzburg and carolina was pretty sick when he was there defensively.....this guy is gonna work great with saban and the 3-4 scheme will thrive..:goof:

I posted this a few weeks ago in the VIP forum. It's part of a post where we were speculating on Capers coming down here and possible connections between the two. :)

Capers has run some hellacious defenses. His Pittsburgh defenses ranked 12th-3rd-3rd. Points allowed ranked 2nd-8th-2nd. The year before he and Cowher got there, they ranked 22nd overall and 23rd in points.

The Jacksonville D ranked 25th the year before he got there. The ranked 5th his first year (1st in points allowed) and 9th the second.

As head coach in Carolina, his defenses ranked high right out of the box. They began 8th and 2nd in points. Then they plummetted. In Houston, they've been at the bottom consistently.

But you look at when he's been DC, and it's consistently at the top. I think he's definitely a career non-head coach (in the NFL) from here on out.

I also found another connection to Nick Saban.

Dom Capers began his coaching career at Nick Saban's alma mater, Kent State, as a graduate assistant. He coached there from 1972-1974. Nick was a defensive back on that '72 team. In 1973, Saban also became a graduate assistant at Kent State. So they coached there together during the '73 and '74 seasons.

VIP rules. :)

I seem to remember back when he was a defensive co-ordinator all his defenses being stout, and he was widely reguarded as a great defensive mind.

Capers last two seasons with the Texans:

2004

Total: 25th
Scoring: 16th
Rushing: 13th
Passing: 24th

2005

Total: 31st
Scoring: 32nd
Rushing: 32nd
Passing: 24th

The numbers don't look good the last two years, but I'm no expert with the Texans. I do know Dom is the kind of coach Saban loves and he should fit in nice. I think the Fins will be in far better shape for Dom to step into, he will only have to worry about D and has been quite a good DC in the past with what Saban will ask of him, I'm sure we will have a rock solid DC.

I am starting to consider this VIP option more and more...nice info thanks.

Didn't Capers pretty much invent the zone blitz when he was with Carolina? I don't recall ever hearing about those before those Carolina teams of the mid-1990s. I think he'll be an ideal upgrade for what Saban started this year and what he ultimately wants this defense to become.

Actually Dick Lebeau invented the zone blitz while Capers served under him at Pittsburgh.
