We didn’t draft him in the second round to “play better on special teams.”
He has athleticism that others are lacking. He made some strong plays in the preseason where he closed on the ball with serious speed. Bottom line, he’s not going to get better sitting on the bench. He’s not a 6th round flyer. He was a second round pick for a reason. Get guys like Kelvin Joseph off the damn field and get the kid some minutes - either when you’re down by 28 to the Bills or up by 50 against the Broncos. Our staff is blowing this so far.
Given the quality of the coaching on the defensive side of the ball thus far, I’m not reading into it too much. Fangio isn’t exactly pulling all the right strings.

I agree but apparently he's not going to get rewarded for dogging it on special teams with snaps on defense. And it sounds like his practices have sucked too. So there's gotta be more going on behind the scenes.

If that’s actually the case, chalk it up to bad scouting. No second round pick should be dogging anything.

I've seen him on special teams, avoiding tackles and jogging.

I'd hate to say it but it seems like we don't have the coaches to really hold these guys accountable.
I think because of his experience, the coaches don't want to allow him to play yet.
They did not give Gink a chance to prove he was a better option rushing the QB, but once allowed, proved them wrong.
They did not think Achane deserved to be out there this early, but once they were forced to give him a shot, he proved he should have been out there earlier.
I like Fangio, and have no doubt in the end, he will get it done to bring a defense we can count on, but if they're holding back Smith because he needs to pay his dues 1st on only special teams, then he's doing a huge injustice to the defense if he does not know if Smith can do a better job in coverage then what we have.

The problem is Cam Smith was drafted in the 2nd round. He should be able to make an impact right away or he was the wrong pick. The Dolphins have wasted so many draft picks over the years by drafting guys who don't contribute right away. Other teams seem to be able to draft players in the first few rounds and even some in the later rounds who are able to make an impact from day 1. Chris Grier has done a terrible job at drafting enough quality players.
