I think it's quite possible that we could go atleast another 10 years before we see any of these teams challenge for the playoffs. With the 2 highest team payrolls in their division in the Red Sox and Yankees, I don't see how either of those 3 teams can field a more competitive team than the Sox or Yanks. Opinions?

be smart

scout better

draft better

It's not impossible

The CBA is up after next year.

I can guarantee you four words will be dicussed:
Salary Cap
Salary Floor

How it affects everyone should be obvious, if its not, think harder.

And we get to watch the drama unfold....yippie :(

The Giants owner was on WFAN this past week. He said we will never see a salary cap in this sport nor does he or the majority of the owners want one.

Bud Selig was also on WFAN and he said things will stay status quo with the next CBA. Says revenue sharing is working perfectly and everyone is happy with it.

Not that i dont believe you, but come negotiation time you know these opinions change. If Im the owner of the Nats or the Jays or the Braves or the Orioles or whoever Im doing whatever I can to keep the Yanks, mets, Sox and the other few really big market teams in check financially. Championships = revenue and hurting the competition helps you get there. :beer1:

I'm a huge Jays fan, and I say we are doomed.

Yah its not impossible as other teams do it but guess what you don't have to play the yankees and redsox that much either. And yes the yankees aren't showing there greats this year, but guess what, next year it may be opposite. Next year the red sox might tank and the yanks will dominate. Theres a damn good chance one of those teams will be on top each year.

What must happen is splitting the bo sox and yankees lets see how other divisions enjoy this.

What else is gay is theres only 4 teams in the west. Giving you better odds every year. Baseball is by far the worst for equality, and next would be the english premiership in soccer.

People are forgetting that the Blue Jays have spent tons recently on signing Wells, Burnett, BJ Ryan, etc. The O's have tons of money to spend but the owner is an idiot and the Devil Rays could have had tons of younger players like Hanley Ramirez and Lastings Milledge IF their former GM wasn't brain dead (and if those trade rumors were true).

Those teams aren't doomed, like Mike said, they need better scouting, drafting and front office help. The Red Sox have stocked up their farm system in just 3 years. The Yankees have recently done a good job getting their farm system back in order too.

It can happen, the problem with those 3 teams (especially Tampa Bay) is that if they want a big name FA they'll need to over spend to get them. I really think in a few years TB will be extremely good.

broken record?

No they have some real talent in Upton, Crawford, Young, Longavia (sp?), Kazmir, Shields, Price and Nierman (?) in the minors. They need major bullpen help and to learn how to trade guys when their stock is high (unlike what they did with Baez, Lugo, Huff etc). They should have traded Baldelli in the offseason now his stock is way down because he's got the injury prone label.

Why would a small market owner want to change the system?

a) The big market teams aren't winning all the time. St.Louis and Florida with small to medium payrolls have won recently.

b) the big market teams are spending so much, that these small owners can sit back, and take FREE MONEY from them for doing nothing!!!!!!!!!!

The system will never change. Want the system to change, have the Yanks, Mets, Red Sox or whoever win about 7 or 8 straight world series rings. Then you will see change. But when you have a new champ every year and small market teams make the playoffs and win......nothing will change. EVER!

still sounds like a broken record

Red Sox can't be on top forever. The buying of talent doth not guarantee a pennant. See the yankees.

NObody is on top forever. Boston finished in 3rd place last year in their own division let alone make the playoffs.

Same for NYY this year.

Most of the big spenders don't even make the playoffs.

Angelos is basically the Al Davis of baseball owners.

If Tampa gets some decent pitching, then watch out, they have a phenomenal offense.

Jays need probably one more arm and theyll be in contention.

When Angelos finally sells the Orioles, they'll be back in the thick of things.

When the Blue Jays start spending their money a little more wisely, they'll be back in the thick of things.

The D-Rays, however, are doomed. More than likely, they'll get good and show some promise (say, in the form of an 85 win season) right about the time their core players are up for big contracts, and they'll walk.
