I was just looking up some numbers and saw a few disturbing little facts.
  • While our offense struggled to keep the QB up getting sacked 41 times last year we managed to get more total passing yardage than our opponents with 3287 total passing yards to 3007 (opponents).
  • We all know the strife and grief Olindo caused us last year and while he had 72% kick completion percentage we picked up Jay Feeley who had an 85.2% kick completion percentage. Just think in close games how much that extra 13% could help. Olindo easily lost us a couple games last year.
  • We averaged 4.2 yards a carry as a team last year and our opponents managed a 3.5 yards per carry stat but still had close yardage to us because our offensive coordinator (he who shall not be named) had some kind of afinity to taking away carries from a promising young back. Ronnie Brown had only 241 carries last year at a 4.2 per carry average. The top five backs last year averaged 350 carries. That's right, 100+ more carries than Ronnie. Imagine if Ronnie had carried the ball just 100 more times; he would have gotten 1,432 rushing yards. Now, in this league it's not like that's mind blowing but I imagine 424 more rushing yards would've gotten us a couple more wins. P.S. Not to mention that Ronnie had only 33 receptions last year while the leagues top five backs caught an average of 56 passes.
  • Our opponents as a whole only scored 5 more touchdowns than we did last year (31 to 26) and with a more offensive minded head coach don't you think we'll manage more than 26 total touchdowns? Could be a couple more wins.
  • We lost four games last year by a touchdown or less. With the additions of Cameron, Beck, Ginn, and a bevy of youth on the offensive line I think that we'll see the endzone just a little bit more.
  • With our defense seeing the return of Zach Thomas, Jason Taylor (argubuly the best MLB in the game and the defensive MVP of the league), Travis Daniels, Jason Allen, (a promising young corner who suffered an injury plagued season where he saw the field less than half the season and a young speedy Jason Allen who was misguided and misused in the previous regemine) Matt Roth (who single handedly turned three games our way last season on reduced playing time), and the addition of pro bowler and veteran leader Joey Porter our defense can only improve on the total defensive rank of #4 last season.
Now while I'm not saying we'll go 12-4 and deep into the playoffs I am saying don't let that 6-10 record last year go to your head. The Dolphins are still a competitive team who have the capability of managing a winning record or better. I know the QB situation is really murky right now but with the possibility of Daunte returning to form, Trent Green coming to us to provide veteran leadership for Beck and Culpepper and competitive play(edit- wait that's one possibility that's a reality now :) ), or even Beck coming in and proving he was a draft steal (Randy and Cam really liked the guy and compared him to Drew Brees when seeking him out in the draft) the QB situation will end up settling down. There is no Joey "loser" Harrington to hold us back this year.

Don't take the Phins for granted.

good points, but Ronnie had fewer carries/ yards because he missed a few games.

No. When he was playing he averaged 18 carries a game. He missed 3 total games during the season and at his seasons average that's just over 50 more carries. Still 50 shy of the leagues top backs average number of carries.

yes i agree, i only meant that it was Part of the reason, not all of it. sorry if i wasnt clear. RB should def. be used more. and i think he will this year with Cam:D

lol edited my post too late. i mention that exact thing. he will be solid this year. Cam will use him alot more

the thing about last that upset me the most was mularkys play calling and losing to the bills and jets twice . that isnt going to set well with me this year. i dont care if hillary duff is on the sidelines flashing those scruptious breast .

So our defense is still good, we were taken over by an offensive-minded head coach, and (with the Trent Green trade) will seemingly hand the reins to a veteran journeyman with some probowls under his belt while he grooms our qb of the future.

Does anybody else hope this season ends up like Tampa Bay's SB season a few years ago? Similarities?

GG
I still can't help but feel we overpaid for Green, though. Maybe I'm just tired of seeing us trade for other teams' qbs.

LOL. Good points. Basically in the NFL, a last place team is not really THAT much worse than a first place team. It does not take much to improve many games from one year to another. Just look at NO.

I think the main reason we were 6-10 last year is because we only averaged 16 points a game....this just doesn't cut it. If we can at least put up some more points and score more, it should give our defense time to rest, and it takes the pressure off of them to always have to shut teams down. Green is a guy who can put up a lot of points for us....especially if Ginn and Chambers get it done. :)

Excellent read. For whatever reason (and I'll name him) Mularkey was obsessed with making Joey the focal point of the offense. He exhibited no instincts or patience to let the running game work when it was actually was working. Yes, there were games where we couldn't get back to the line of scrimmage (Steelers & Vikings) butr there were too many games where Mularkey decided that Joey had to throw 50 short passes for us to win! Well, he's coaching the tight ends. Maybe he won't hurt us there as much.

As long as he's not calling the plays I don't care what he's doing. He can coach the waterboys for all I care.

Basically, we got a new OC and head coach who can actually do something with the talent around him. Just look at what he did what he did in San Diego.
