If you look at preseason power polls and where teams are projected to be drafting, the Miami Dolphins are near the bottom of the barrel in the NFL.

Now it's certainly possible that Miami wins 3-4 games and picks in the top 5. That can happen for any team. But a lot would have to go wrong for that to materialize.

At least in my view, the talent on this team is about NFL average which means the Dolphins should be around 8-8. That said, this team also has some very intriguing young talent and players who could emerge and make a big impact. Not to mention the return of Tannehill should be huge.

Admittedly, Miami probably lost its best player on offense in Landry and its best player on defense in Suh. In the case of Landry the Dolphins have plenty of options at wide receiver. Suh leaves the biggest hole and the run defense is really the biggest concern at this point.

I'm not saying Miami is a super bowl team by any means, but honestly if the young talent pulls through the Dolphins could be challenging for one of the wildcard berths. That, and staying relatively healthy, are the key to the season.

I believe they're under-rated and as someone else pointed out last evening. It boggles my mind how the Colts, with a new unproven HC, a QB who can't even lift his arm and wasn't so great the 2 years he was last active, a reworked unproven OL , a questionable D including the DBs etc. could be more highly thought of.

My consolation is that the majority of those who might be under-estimating the Fins are little more than glorified superfans who prior to the mega flow of internet information, in a time when there was journalistic merit, would be pounding an IBM selectric in their folks basement.

Commoners see they let Landry, Suh, and Pouncey go so that apparently means they’re garbage. I’d be real curious to see had those players been retained what their ranking would be. I’m imagining low 20s at best.

These idiots don’t know anything until teams prove their worth. As always it’s up to Miami to put up or shut up.

True. I think a lot of the media are looking at what Pouncey used to be and not accounting for what Miami brought in. I actually think Kilgore is a slight improvement there. The Suh loss is the most significant because defensive tackle is a major question mark.

We could be but somehow we always seem to play up and down to our competetion. Hopefully this year we get that consistency that we’ve all been waiting for. Glad to see some of the arguing stop on the board and sorry for playing in to some of that.

It’s a new season and we still breathing haha. Phins up let’s goooo

In my view:

2018.........2017
QB >
OL >
WR <
TE >
RB =
DT <
DE >
LB >
DB >
S >

I think both running back and wide receiver could be better, but have to account for the losses of Landry and Ajayi there.

Agreed except I think our RB situation is much better this year than last. It should be the strong point of the offense if Drake stays healthy.

And I add this knowing it might be a topic for a different thread, but:
How is the role of a DT going to change now that the new helmet rule is in place? How would that rule have affected Suh's style of play? Would it have neutralized him more, or made him more dangerous because of his agility? Is his loss reduced because the role of a DT will change due to this new rule? Or do we not even know this yet?

Akeem Spence is intriguing to me based on his play last 8 games last year playing in a scheme that suited him and playing 3 technique. He was rated #16 as pass rusher and #14 run stopper, may have that backwards tho....TB miscast him and he was not very good for them. He played last year 3 tech on the wide 9. I have hope that he' undervalued by most but puts out sim8lar play for us, if that' the case the drop off shouldn' be so bleak.

Suh is a great DT but being paid as the highest DT in the league he wasn't even in the top 5 for his play. I know he was doubled and sometimes tripled up, but he freelancer a ton and didn' always play with gap control within the scheme also add in hos penchant for jumping offsides, it might not be a drastic fall for us.

Of course it' conjecture and projection but I think based off Spence's play last season there's confidence in that front 4 as a whole. 1 player who is being completely undervalued by most is Vincent Taylor and his play vs the run, in his 100 plus snaps he was graded very well and I imagine will get plenty of playing time this year. All 4 of our current DT's fit the teams idea of having rotational pieces, I think as a group they may be better than we think.

I do wish we would look to add 1 more guy, and feel Hank8ns would be a great add and would instill confidence in the fan base, but the staff may feel we are fine. I' excited about our new D Line coach and feel we will get more pressure from the edges than we have in a long time. I'm excited to watch this play out, and I think our Defense will be greatly improved from the past few years. Our LBers are better and faster, as well as our DB's.

I think the naysayers will be changing their tune by mid October.

The national media is looking more at what we lost compared to what we gained and that is understandable. We lost a lot of big name players, couple with the fact that the Phins didn't pick up a QB and have done little over the 2 decades or season is supposedly doomed. The Dolphins are going to surprise some folks this season......book it.

We have a lot of unknowns heading into the season even for those who follow the Dolphins closely. The probability of all the things that went wrong last year repeating this year is very unlikely. I think we are better built to withstand some injuries/losses. Ultimately, the key to the season still relies on Tannehill and the offensive line. I don't mind being under the radar but if we want recognition we must win. Winning solves a lot of blemishes.

On a tangent: it was hard to watch Landry interview in brown colors.

... And they see a 6-10 team last year, don't consider the miriade of circumstances that led to that record, and assume the subtractions you mention lead to less than 6-10.
