Like many of you, I live in Miami. Some of yo may even work for Miami-Dade County. I have been a Dolphin fan since birth, in the only perfect season they had. Here's my question. Are the players worth the money the are getting?
Miami-Dade County is getting ready to cut 1200 employees to help with the annual budget. But, they seem to be willing to spend millions justto make the Miami Dolphins Org. happy. Whether it is building new stadiums, overhauling the surrounding area and even building an exit ramp from the Turnpike to drop people off right at the stadium, the commisioners will do whatever it takes to keep the Dolphins here. From the roof of my house, I can watch the big screens at Dolphin stadium. That's pretty close. When the superbowl was here, trafic was a nightmare for the whole day. I could put up with the bs if I had a team that performed. But last few years, I have been left unsatisfied with the effort of the team.

What do you think? Are they worth higher property taxes to keep them happy?

does wayne H. pays for almost everything?

If you dont like thier salaries stop watching games on TV and the money to feed thier salaries will dry up.

As far as cities bending over backwards to help teams. They will tell you that the franchise pumps far more money into the local economy then they are spending to keep them here. I dont know if its true but that is what they will tell you to justify it.

We live in a capitalism society that highly prioritizes football so we pay them well, If it bothers you dont follow it.

Just worring about my job, and the jobs of 1199 other people that support the team, but need to make a living.

They spend money on the team to make more money for the city. Don't think it's philantrophy from the city.

The problem is most government employees and their unions do everything they can to squeeze every possible penny out of the local government demanding huge raises, amazing health benifits, defined benefit pensions... and many other perks, despite for the most part being unskilled workers with little to no education. Then the unions do everything they can to stop any cuts to social service programs, paycuts, and anything else that can impact their workers' jobs, and then they are amazed when cuts to the workforce HAVE to be made in order for anything to keep operating.

(I am a government employee BTW, and the whining and sense of entitlement that governement employees have is absolutely amazing to me.)

The City/county/state more than recoups any expenditures related to the Fins. Miami-Dade County has to cut its budget because its leadership is incompetent and/or corrupt. Football has nothing to do with it.

Aura Li, I am empathetic that you might have to find new work, or that 1200 people may have to find new work, but I would offer a few insights into your query:

1. Any services that MDC provides in and around Dolphin Stadium are invoiced directly to the Dolphins organization.

2. While there may be capital plans for adjusting roadworks and highways to better handle traffic (if there are), these types of programs are well financed over twenty years or more, and the real estate taxes on Dolphins Stadium alone could very likely handle the financing of such funding.

3. The fact that MDC is in financial difficulty has everything to do with a combination of poor County management, and the new tax bill just passed in Tallahassee.

Whether the Dolphins are consistent winners or not, they are a force in the National Football League and economic benefit the bring to South Florida, in addition to additional employment at Dolphin Stadium, is quite significant (it could be in the hundreds of millions of dollars). Don't be so quick to judge the Phins or the players, as they spend A LOT of that money they earn playing football right here in your own back yard.

That may not be the perfect answer, nor the answer you want to hear, but until I can download specific numbers, that's the best you can get.

im pretty sure the renovations that are going on at dolphin stadium are being paid in full by huizenga...all 200 million....and originally when the dolphins first came here it wasnt the city that put that money into making a team here it was joe robbie who brought the dolphins here and it was his money that built the stadium so the city really hasnt put much into the dolphins...plus they reap the benefits from the 9 super bowls that miami has hosted as it brings in hundreds of millions of dollars to the city that hosts it

Dude you're all over the place in this post.

First you ask if the players are worth the money they are getting paid and mention employees of the county getting laid off. You don't honestly think the County pays player salaries or that property taxes do and if you're smart enough to realize that then why did you even mention player salaries?

Then you go off on the county paying to keep the Phins organization happy..... Well which is it players or the organization?

Further you mention the county "building stadiums".
Which stadium is that? Dolphin stadium was built with private funds by Joe Robbie. The stadium upgrades are being financed through Dolphin enterprises and investors. I know of no county funds or "property taxes" going towards the stadium upgrade. Do you know something we don't?

Then you go mention how traffic was a mess on the day of the super bowl. No Shiznit? I never would have figured that.
Not to mention you just complained about an event that increases county revenue in a post where I think the main point of your post was complaining about the county losing money where the stadium and Dolphins is concerned. Good one there, Kudos!

This whole post was Twighlight Zone.

Pro Player Stadium was built with no money from the county.

AND what does it mean when the county is overhauling the surrounding areas, and building off ramps?

JOBS!!

The 1200 possible layoffs have absolutely nothing to do with the Dolphins

Thank you for shinning some light on my overpaid union worker lack of knowledge.
Yes, Joe Robbie built this stadium when the only thing out here was the Turnpike, a holiday inn and Calder race course. But I am one of the people watching the news and, maybe I am being biased here, but I keep hearing the words, "New stadium, or we leave Miami." They may only be talking about the Marlins being little brats, But all I know is there has been a lot of talk about building a new stadium, and the commishioners are willing to raise millions in tax money to keep them here.

Oh By the eway, you guys are all right about the incompetence and curroption. I will be the first to agree with that. Seems that is all we can elect around here.

Again, thank you. I would agree that 9 hosted Superbowls has brought a lot of money into my area. Even the inconveince of all the traffic is a good sign for my local stores.
