Are we asking too much of Daunte in 2006?

The sentiment among many Dolphins fans is that Daunte brings new hope to the franchise not only for the future, but for 2006 specifically. But are we asking too much too soon for DC to contribute significantly in this upcoming season?

He's not recovering from a high ankle sprain. The man shredded his knee. Optimistically speaking team officials have estimated DC being ready for the start of the 2006 campaign. Again, OPTIMISTICALLY. At which point he would have to get comfortable during the season when the games actually matter. In a highly competitive AFC and in a division with a rival like the Patriots, a slow start would be a massive hinderence.

Most recently the Fins honchos have been participating in their version of backup QB speed dating while entertaining the likes of Joey Harrington and Jamie Martin among others. Is this an indication that, indeed, we are going to be in need of somebody to hold down the reigns while DC truly gets back into playing shape? Joey Harrington himself was quoted as liking the Dolphins situation more because he stands more chance of actually playing. That doesn't instill confidence in Daunte being ready at the start of the season.

Personally, I'm a bit on the cautious side about this season. On paper, it's got potential written all over it. Yet the main cog in the machine, one Daunte Culpepper, is at this point quite the unknown.

Are you kidding me? Did you forget who was our quarterback last year? I think my grandma could lead the Dolphins better then GF.

On another note, people are going crazy talking about his knee. I understand that it is a major injury, but he is a quarterback. He can still throw with the best of them so I'm not worried at all.

I'm concerned from the fact that they don't appear to be too confident in Cleo Lemon's abilities with all this shopping........and he'd be the guy to hold it down for DC.

None of your concerns can be answered before training camp so have a drink and relax. DC will play when the coaches think he's ready and not before.

Good points, but I think Daunte's familiarity with the system will accelerate things dramatically. He will still have to work on his chemistry, but hey Frerotte didn't get comfortable with everyone until very late in the season. I think another factor is that the running game has been vastly upgraded with the signing of Beasley. If Beasley plays at just 70% of his capability, he's better than any FB to suit up for the Phins (Not named Csonzka). MM likes running the ball a heck of a lot more than SL, so I don't think Daunte or any QB will be asked to win games, I think just not lose them. Had Culpepper been able to do that last year, he would've have a much better season.

This is the microwave generation. Im happy that we got a probowl QB. I do want him to take his time recovering. Even if that means sitting out in 2006. I think we will be surprised by Cleo Lemon's ability. Of course I wish we still had Sage as a backup. But come 2007....I expect Daunte to be whooping str8 azz...on the ground and through the air.

I'll hope for the best but my gut tells me Daunte's not taking us to the promised land. If nothing else, his signing got some fans pumped up, must be because of name recognition. :rolleyes2

None of Miami's moves signal panic, just preparation. Even if Daunte hadn't been injured last year, with Frerotte and Sage gone, would you want unproven and untested Cleo as the backup? No. Smart move to acquire an experienced backup, if it happens.

Sitting out in 2006 if his injury makes him unable to play is one thing. Sitting out 2006 just cuz would be dumb. I can't imagine how rusty his game would be in 07 after not suiting up for a year and a half.

all, all those 30+ TD seasons have nothing to do with it. :rolleyes2

Some people are and if Culpepper doesnt put up the kind of numbers they want in his first season with us, many people will call him a bust.

I'm not saying that the carousel of backup QB interviews signals panic........however......... Harrington's most recent comments about where he'd like to end up lend me to believe that there's a pretty good chance we need somebody to hold down the fort early on and that Daunte taking us to the promise land in his first season is a bit of a stretch at this point.

Eh, to call him a bust after one season would be extremely naive given the circumstances.
