ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- If success is measured by beauty, then the Dolphins failed miserably on Sunday because this 15-10 victory was more beast than beauty.
As masterpieces go, this one was painted with crayons, and sometimes the Dolphins drew outside the lines -- like when Benny Sapp and Jason Allen both dropped easy opportunities for pick-six interceptions.
But folks, the NFL game is not a beauty contest. It is a contest of wills and motivation and violence. It is sometimes a measure of who fails least. It is a contest of the bottom line.
And in that regard, the Dolphins on Sunday looked good enough.
Yes, there is a long, long, long way for this team to go before we are including them in conversations with other playoff-caliber teams. But their record today cannot be any better.
They have won an opener for the first time under coach Tony Sparano. They have won in Buffalo for the first time in six tries. They are tied for first place in the AFC East.
Beautiful enough, thanks.
``It feels great to be 1-0. Great. It's a first step. A good first step,'' Sparano said afterward.
Notice he didn't say it was the final step. Notice he didn't say the Dolphins have arrived or are now good enough to win a Super Bowl.
They are not, by the way. But neither do they have to be at this point in the season.
