I ran across this article by Albert Breer going over every teams power structure from 2013 (some may have changed now with new head coaches).

8 teams with the same as Fins
Eagles (although Kelly has more say than Philbin)
Giants
Lions
49ers
Jets
Cheifs
Chargers
Titans

5 teams have coaches with all power that reports to owner (possibly 6 not sure Redskins now with Gruden, Shanahan had all power). Bengals were unknown but said Lewis has good relationship with owner. Plus the Cowboys coach reports to Owner

15 confirmed that coach reports to owners (good possibility of 17 teams)

2 teams with an Ex VP running show (Browns & Broncos)

From what I recall all have a cap person (Aponte for us) that reports to GM LIKE US

This shows that we are not to different from other teams and it's NOT uncommon to have the coach report to the owner since it seems just over HALF of the league does it as well. These GM's that turned us down wanting the power to hire/fire coach may have a short list of teams to try and get a promotion.

Marvin Lewis reports directly to Mike Brown, who is the GM of the Bengals.

I cannot compare the Fins to any other team in the league right now. It is a ****show.

I'm not entirely sure what the Raiders' overall power structure is, but it's been said recently that it's Mark Davis' call on Dennis Allen. So while the head coach may 'report' to the GM in Oakland, the owner retains the power to hire and fire there as far as I know.

Here is what it said about Bengals:
Both Lewis and Tobin, in particular, have become influential forces within the organization, having earned the right, in Brown's eyes, to help lead the franchise. It's of the older school, but winning does matter here, where the family business is football and nothing else.

McKenzie the GM of Raiders had total control

Okay, well not to split hairs but I saw it reported repeatedly right after the season ended that Mark Davis was the one making the call on Allen and he was the one everyone was asking about it. So while you may be correct, Davis clearly seems to have some say in who the coach is.

Yeah, this team screwed the GM hiring process. But a lot of the negative perceptions people have lately about our team are due to crap reports from crap reporters.

Im sure the guys that turned us down did not do it because of reporters. I mean they met our leadership first hand and have studied the situation

Agree

We aren't really helping ourselves with some of the things we do.....but I agree with you.

You know significantly less than you think you do Hayden, unless you're employed directly to the Dolphins organization with an in-house job. I doubt the latter though.

Are you telling me you full faith and think the Dolphins are on path to success right now? Do you believe that? Really?

Good article.

I think we're obviously struggling, but there's nothing inherently wrong with our structure, with people sharing power and reporting to the owner or designated representative of the owner. I think it depends on who you have. Like it said, we were coach-driven and used to have the Shula/JJ/Saban mentality. Parcells blew that up. Now, it seems that the owner is trying to get us back to that.

I thought this was interesting, in reference to New England:

Again, you see the guys from that tree, and they get out there and can't handle some of the other facets of running a team, outside their comfort zone. So you look at it, and you say, 'It's Belichick.' And if it wasn't Belichick, that structure probably wouldn't work, because it hasn't with guys who've come out of that system."
