A journey across Nick Saban's NFL and collegiate coaching stops reveal that his defenses usually became dominant by his fourth season with the same team.
If Saban's track record holds to form, don't count on many of the Dolphins' current defensive stalwarts being around to reap the benefits. Saban overhauled the Browns' defense to such an extent that from the season before his arrival (1990) to the end of his tenure (1994), only defensive tackle Michael Dean Perry remained. The end result was a starting unit that contained four All-League selections (Perry, defensive end Rob Burnett, late safety Eric Turner and linebacker Pepper Johnson). Neither of the Browns' four-time Pro Bowlers -- cornerback Frank Minnifield and linebacker Clay Matthews -- survived the purge. So don't expect sentiment to be a factor in Saban's personnel decisions (see Ed Perry, Matt Turk, Heath Evans and Larry Chester).
But, Saban said, his defense was already dominant in 1993. "I don't think it was the people involved [on defense]," he said. "You know it's hard to win in this league if you don't have a quarterback."
Saban, who signed a five-year contract when he was hired in December, began his defensive facelift during the offseason. Seven of the 11 starters on defense weren't on the roster last season, including two rookies and five veterans who have a combined 47 years of NFL service.
