The Dolphins owner pulled his cellphone out of his pocket and answered the call.

"Hello, Jim?" Ross said.

Ross was joking, although he and Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh do talk often. And Harbaugh won't be the Dolphins' next coach, Ross said, because it would be too awkward prying him away from Ann Arbor.

"He's not coming here," Ross said. "I've got my name on too many building up there. But we don't have to worry -- we have a great guy."

That's to be determined, starting with Friday's practice. The Dolphins opened camp under Adam Gase, their ninth coach since 2004, and his assignment is to end an eight-year playoff drought.

In July, even the Dolphins are optimistic.

"Everybody starts undefeated and with great expectations," Ross said. "This year I'm particularly excited. I think we've done a lot in the organization over the last year. I'm excited as I can be."

The Dolphins promoted Chris Grier to general manager in January, and he and executive vice president of football operations Mike Tannenbaum have brought in 45 new players for the new coaching staff.

Gase began sorting it all out on a typically sweltering summer morning. The energy level was high, and sustaining that will be the challenge, Gase said.

"The first day of practice, everybody's excited to get back out there," Gase said. "The telling part's going to be when we're about six or seven days into this thing and in full pads. Where are we going to be then?"

Word of the first reinforcement came during practice, when the Dolphins learned defensive end Dion Jordan has been reinstated by the NFL after serving a suspension for 15 months for his latest violation of the league's substance abuse policy. Jordan can participate in meetings and conditioning work immediately, and is expected to join practice soon.

Miami began camp without five players who went on the active-physically unable to perform list, including four-time Pro Bowl running back Arian Foster, who is recovering from Achilles tendon surgery last season. Also put on PUP were cornerbacks Bobby McCain and Xavien Howard, running back Damien Williams and linebacker Zach Vigil.

All are day to day, Gase said, which means they could join practice soon.

I'm hyped per the usual. I felt good about Philbin when he got hired and supported him for probably too long but I feel a little different this time around with Gase and company.

It just feels like he'll bring a new, youthful energy to the team that Philbin was never able to establish.

He's 39 years old... Could you folks imagine if this is the coach we've been looking for the last 15 years? We could be looking at the coach that will run the show for the next 10+ years. Only time will tell but I'm truly excited to have Gase as our HC.

10 years? I hope he's another Shula and is here for 30+

Please let this be true...

My heart can't take many more years of let-downs...

Just make the damn playoffs! :brewskis:

Me too, so I'm trying to temper my enthusiasm this go around. Very hopeful but taking the wait-n-see approach.

I'm very confident about Gase. Something about his swagger. The last coaches I as confident about were Jimmy Johnson and Nick Saban. Everyone else was seen with cautious optimism at best.

Being the optimist that I try to be, I think the offense has the chance to be really good, lots of good young players. The defense, however, scares the crap out of me.

Gase reminds me of Campbell but with a higher football IQ

Will say this, Gase is taking a very hands on approach towards everything which is not only refreshing, but also his techniques remind me of some of the better coaches in the game today. Does that mean he's gonna be elite? Nah, but he's atleast doing all the right things

You want to hear something crazy. Gase could coach for the next 30 years (69 years old), average 10 wins a season, and he'd still be 47 wins shy of Shula's record.

Here's to 35 years of greatness.

I felt good about Philbin and I do/did think he had some solid ideas, but what's come out (and is very alarming to me) is how little responsibility Philbin actually took with the players. Darlington said even before last year, a big issue the players had was with Joe saying "It is not my job to get you guys motivated" and Philbin had zero communication skills with his players

We're not gonna worry about that with Adam Gase. He doesn't mind getting players motivated and hyped. Just a different atmosphere will make this team better.

Cannot be worst then the crappy coaching failbin did. I mean several of us on this board warned everyone this guy sucks. I mean even after bully gate came out ppl were still supporting this guy on this board. It has lead me to believe some posters on this board are not real dolphins fans.

Is this really necessary? I admit I was one that held on to the Philbin train longer than I should have. But Judah Priest dude, calling us out like this is bull****. Not real fans!? Idiotic.

Being a Dolphins fan for over 30 years I have seen a lot. I normally don't buy in to the talk about the new coaches, but I must say I think we have finally found our head coach of the future. As an organization, and us as fans have to give him some time. We are going to be in constant rebuilding mode until we stop changing coaches, and I think Gase is the coach that it stops with.
