Q: I hear lots of football players say to play GREAT you have to play loose. With this regime watching every player with microscopes, is this team too tight to ever be GREAT? Noc, North Miami Beach.

A: Interesting question. Yes, these Dolphins are pretty buttoned down. Tony Sparano’s slogan, the one that’s plastered on the walls of the locker room and in the team auditorium, is “Tough. Smart. Disciplined.” Yet, these aren’t the Tom Coughlin Giants of the pre-Super Bowl breakthrough. Sparano reminded his team at one point in the second half of last season to get back to the love of the game, to play with the enthusiam they once showed in the back yard or the school yard as kids growing up. That doesn’t sound to me like a coach who’s afraid to give his team a little more leash when the situation calls for it. Plus, you ever watch Sparano on the sideline? The guy’s incredibly effusive. No coach in the game celebrates good plays with as much zest as the man running the Dolphins on game day. His players pick up on that and have fun on the field, too.

IN order to play loose in the sense the writer is speaking you have to have disciplined players that you dont have to babysit all the time. Do we have those types of players that can self discipline is the question.

You can be loose and disciplined at the same time. As long as you make your reads, are in the right position, and dont cause stupid penalties, you can still have lots of fun out there!!!

Not to mention...WINNING IS FUN!!
