Now I wont beat a dead horse and say that Gase is lacking foresight in adding a better back up QB, but I will say that the way he is treating the back up QB position is troubling.

There are the obvious reasons, and then there are the not so obvious reasons that seem to trouble me most.

First off, Ryan Tanehill is my preference to start and play. It is obvious since he has shown he can lead this team, and deserves the chance to try to for as long as he produces wins, but it is also obvious that there is a huge drop off after Ryan, which was confirmed by Gase last year when he gave Jay Cutler 10 million dollars to try to save the season, when Ryan went down.

The obvious issues with not getting a quality replacement QB as an insurance policy is that we once again leave ourselves at risk to have a completely lost season if Ryan Tannehill goes down.

Some of you will argue who? But at this point that argument is moot because all the free agent QB's are gone, but there were fringe candidates that could have come in here and competed with Ryan, and surely beat out Osweiler, Fales, and Petty. We could have even drafted a QB for the years to come, and had him in as a possible insurance policy for RT. Lamar Jackson comes to mind at our pick or with a trade down, and there were other serviceable candidates to potentially groom... and still we did nothing.

The not so obvious issues with this lack of foresight, is that this a further sign that Gase, or this regime, is not being completely thorough in fixing the issues with personnel and it extends to much more than just QB, currently our lackadaisical Linebackers and DT's come to mind. Not only that, but Gase and company are showing that they do not learn from their mistakes. If Ryan gets hurt again, they will once again scramble around looking for a substandard bandaid QB, whom we will overpay again for 1 year of horrible service, before ultimately signing someone new in free agency or drafting a rookie to finally compete with RT17.

Let us hope that this lack of foresight doesn't come back to bite us, as it has in years past, but let's not kid ourselves, it always does.

To be completely honest, seeing RGIII play against us made me wish we had him as a backup. He showed me more against our starting unit than any of our back ups have shown against lower levels of competition, and he is their 3rd string QB.

Gase is the type of guy that'll go down with his sinking ship instead of admitting fault. Defend "his guy" by shooting down some other aspect of the team.

The fact that our back-up QB position is in the state that it's in considering our last two seasons is unacceptable. Its unfathomable really.

Look around the league at some of the backup QB's. There are only a handful who have anyone resembling decent and few of those would be able to lead their team to a winning season if they had to play more than half the season.

Nathan Peterman, Taylor Heinicke, Matt Barkley, Joe Webb, Cooper Rush, Chad Kelly, Austin Davis, Davis Webb, EJ Manuel, Geno Smith, Sean Mannion, C.J. Beathard, Taysom Hill, Blaine Gabbert, Cody Kessler, Colt McCoy, Brett Hundley, Chad Henne, Chase Daniel, Trevor Siemian, Brian Hoyer.

That's 21 of 32 teams there. Fales does not look as bad when you look at this group as a whole.

Yep. There’s 2 deep hot garbage at qb all over the league.

The backup QB is on the roster . . . For now. If a top backup becomes available at a good price, even Gase will jump

Insurance is something you *might* have to use in case of an unusual incident. The backup QB is not "insurance" for the Dolphins, he's the inevitable starter.

In my opinion...I see RG3 going down with his style of play...Lamar Jackson too.

You just can’t take big shots and hope too be healthy as a QB in this league.

The defenders are too big and fast.

He looks absolutely lost playing against scrubs.

When your QB has missed the time Tannehill has you make back up a priority. You don't sit pat with David Fales, bring in Brock Osweiler and think the job is done.

I have no objection to having a crappy backup. If TH really goes down long term then I'd rather tank the season than win some stupid meaningless games and end up 6-10 with a pick outside the top 10. I’m sure Gase didn’t like missing out on the QBs this year by being out of the top 10.

If TH goes down short term then the defense will need to carry the team for a couple of games and if they cant do that, then we werent going to go anywhere anyway.

Oh so you’re saying Tannehill is guaranteed to get injured eh?

Again, take a look at other backups across the league. Fales isn’t even average probably but we could do much worse. For example- Brock Osweiler

You say things like you know things.

I'll go on record by saying Gase dropped the ball when he signed Cutler and again by not addressing the position yet again. Now if he absolutely loves Fales, Brock, or Petty I'll say at least he's a man of conviction but it doesn't give him a free pass yet again if it doesn't work out.

The way I see it if he coached the Eagles they would have finished with a top 20 pick.

Couple of things to consider...

  • If you want insurance, as in winning games in 2018 with your backup, then you can scratch out the draft option, after the top 10, every options the Fins had werent immediate upgrades over Fales... Long term? Most probably, but then its not a 2018 insurance....
  • The team is really spread thin, there's really not a whole lot of top flight talent on it. Which makes spending resources on a player that most probably wont see the field not such a good proposition. I'll concede that this is very debateable as a strategy and there are good arguments on both sides. In the end, Fins decided that FS, TE, 2X LB, CB, LG, C... were more urgent needs than backup QB... I agree...
