The best Bonds story ever is still the ALL STAR GAME story.
For those who don't know at the all star game, the Monday before and the Tuesday of. The players hang out, chill, tell war stories, and sign a bunch of autographes for each other. Whether it be for personal use or for something to be auctioned off or something.
A few years back, the back-up catcher on the NL squad. His name slips my mind right now, walks up to Barry, real nice, respectful and such. Says, someone in his family is a huge fan of his (bonds) and would he mind signing this bat for him so he can give it to him as a gift.
Bonds looks at the guy, laughs and says...."NO"......then keeps laughing and walks away!!
Of course word of that story spread the 2 days of the all star monday/tuesday and Bonds is hated by everyone again.
It's the greatest story ever. Bonds just doesn't care if anyone likes him.
When Bonds dies, they will hold his funeral in a telephone booth. Nobody's gonna show up!!
I think the Philly fan story tops it. Although, around these parts, Barry is a god. I am stuck in Giants-homerism land. As you can tell from my sig, I am probably the most hated guy in NOR-CAL.
Anyway, the Philly fan story. So, Bonds is pretyt much guarenteed to get booed when he ties/surpasses Babe Ruth, unless he does it in San Fran. Well, he ties the record in Philly, and lo and behold, he is given a surprising standing ovation from the hometown Philly fans. He also has the sheer dumb luck of having, probably the only Giant fan in Philly, catch the homerun ball.
The guy, being a good little Giants fan (yuck), doesn't want money, doesn't want fame, doesn't even want to be on Barry's tv show. All he wants to do is give Barry the ball in exchange for an autograph. Given the circumstances, and the chance for a little bit of good pub (all the cameras are on him), you would think Barry would sign a piece of paper, his shirt, anything right?
Wrong.
Barry refused. He didn't give him an autograph, and instead demanded that the fan sign a waiver so that they didn't have to blur out or cut him from the reality show Bonds was taping. Surreal.
That is just how Barry is I guess. I don't ocmmend him for his behavior, because while some may look at ihm and say he doesn't care, I look at him and think he is delusional.
As for him returing to San Fran, the writing is on the wall. They don't want him back and they hope he chooses to go elsewhere. One of the managing partners was being interviewed yesterday during their last loss of the season, and when asked about Barry, he sidestepped the question and said, "We are going to do what is best for San Francisco and the Giants."
Pretty much sums it up to me. He also said they ARE going to get younger, and did so today by firing Felipe Alou, who happens to be 346 years old. They are telling Bonds to go without having to say it. That way they save face with the fans. If Bonds comes back, it is because he is clueless and the Giants organization are to big of wusses to come right out and say they are turfing him out.
