Barry Jackson: Dolphins Day 2, Intriguing receiver battle

I am thinking about it…lol. I NEVER have been sick in the summer. I am getting old. At least TC is here to talk about.

Summer colds suck brother I have been fighting one for three days. My son and wife had strep in the last two weeks and my infant son has been running a fevor, so the sick house finally got me...Today I am actually starting to feel human again and can swallow for the first time in three days, but mine wasn't strep either they say...

I only see two locks and that's Wallace and Landry. I wouldn't be shocked if they shopped Hartline and Gibson to see if they could get a deal for one of them. If they keep Wallace, Gibson, and Hartline then I see Landry as the 4th. Keeping 5 or 6 receivers probably depends on if Thigpen keeps his job or if someone can unseat him. I am not a huge fan of Thigpen so I would love to see one of the receivers on the bubble beat him out.

I like Hazel and Binns for size but not sure how much can help on special teams. Williams can return kicks and punts and solid hands. Matthews I like. I know he was in the doghouse for a bit, but he seems to have woken up and is putting in the extra time now.

Miami finds themselves in a great situation with 8 receivers that can play and possible will play on NFL rosters in 2014, the bad thing is they will only keep 5-6 of them

Every team probably feels like they have a guy like Matthews, a guy that's flashed physical ability but hasn't been able to put it all together. I can't see him have any value in a trade. Same with Gibson (though for a different reason). Even Hartline, with his contract, wouldn't return much in a trade.

Which WR's would you like to keep for this team, at this time? Other than Wallace, Hartline, /Gibson, and Matthews, I really don't know all that much on the others as to their ability to impact the team this year.

Good to see ya back Shane, and hope the family gets well soon. Those damn summer flu bugs are more like 500 pound gorillas who won't go away.

The one thing I cannot understand is that Hartline and Gibson do have a great chemistry with RT and this is his tell tale year. Why look to get rid of guys he really clicks with to replace them with guys he has not?

Thanks, and yeah been a rough couple of weeks and finally caught up to me...LOL

I understand the chemistry between Tannehill, Hartline and Gibson, but I think his chemistry for Hartline holds him back at times. The way I look at it is Hartline, Gibson, Landry, Williams and Matthews are all the same type of receivers (yes some are more polished than others and each have a little different strength) and while all are solid #2 and slot receivers I am not sure if you lost one it would be a major impact to the team.

Binns and Hazel offer something different. They both have size and Binns has speed. Unless they are planning on using Egnew as the primary red zone target Miami doesn't hav one if Binns or Hazel don't make the final roster.

I just feel the team wouldn't be hurt if Hartline or Gibson weren't there and if they were able to turn them into a draft pick it would be better for the team. Of course you know I am not a huge Hartline fan anyway...LOL

No kidding it is like a bio lab in my house. Hope you are doing better.

The last few receivers will be determined by special teams. Landry looks like he can help there, but what will Matthews or Williams offer?

Have to disagree. Tannehill has little proven with an entire new O coming in. The OL is a mess, and no one knows how the RB's will do. The only bit of security he has is at WR and Clay. Why would anyone want to take that away from him to take a shot on someone new? He has more than enough to worry about.

At this time? Well I'd want to keep the obvious (except Gibson, I've said I don't think he makes it, but right now he looks like a lock). As for the guys at the bottom of the roster, I'm not really as familiar with them as I usually am, but in general I tend to think that the tie should go to the younger player. I'm doubtful about Armon Binns (I was not a fan of his when he was in college) and think that guys like Damian Williams or Stephen Williams will probably look better than their talent level simply because they've in the league for a while and have a few things figured out.

I'm intrigued by Matt Hazel, but he has to show he's not another Jasper Collins (who was totally overwhelmed by the uptick in competition and found himself pretty much unable to beat the jam). I like receivers with his body type, though, guys that are in that 6'1, 185 pound range. I think they tend to make the best receivers when it's all said and done. The main challenge for them ends up being the physicality part of the game... beating the jam, body control on tough catches. These days the physically imposing receivers are getting more and more help from the rules so you're seeing more of those guys coming in and being successful than the Marvin Harrison/Torry Holt prototype I grew up watching.

I'm not a Binns fan either, and he has appeared to be fragile. I see Hazel on the practice squad, maybe. On the others, I think they have to show something on special team to make a roster choice difficult.

I'm not as down on Thigpen as some, as his blocking on returns was almost as bad as our OL last year but, can see him possibly being beat out in preseason if he does not show well.

Thigpen is pretty much a returner-only who's really not that good of a returner. I'd make Matthews the punt returner -- he was good at it in college and is our best RAC receiver. As for kick returner... harder to say without knowing who's going to make the team.

Gibson's battled tested with both Tannehill and in '12 leading the league in best 3rd down and TD completion percentages when with the mediocre Rams. At his moderate price tag, cutting one of our few proven clutch receivers is being penny-wise and pound foolish

Agree on Matthews as a punt returner. Think he would be better than Bess was, good hands, no mistakes, and will get some extra yardage. The NFL has negated kick returns, not sure on Thigpen unless Lazor sees more from him on O.

Agreed. Kick returns are such a small part of the game that it would be foolish to keep someone on the active roster just for that. Punt returns are a bigger part of the game now but still not that vital. The difference between the top punt returners and the mediocre ones can't be more than two or three yards per return, which is... what? Maybe 10 yards a game?

Find somebody who's already going to be on the active roster. As long as they catch the ball and don't fumble it doesn't make that big of a difference. One guy I'd like to see try it out is Don Jones. He is a physical freak with great speed and used to be a running back. Doesn't seem like a role he's ever had, though, and since he moved to defense his running instincts are probably not so good.
