Barry Jackson: Dolphins Draft Nuggets

How disappointing is Dion Jordan? Wow.

I get what Jimmy Johnson is saying, but I should have seen a RB running the football which would have won a Super Bowl for Seattle instead of dumb ass pass play.

They definitely tried to get too cute. I disagree that runningbacks cannot really help a team win a superbowl.
Emmit Smith, John Riggins, Larry Czonka, Timmie Smith all were quite instrumental in their teams winning.

I do agree with his point on injured players though. You can take them but not this high.

I agree with you. I get what he is saying and it is what I am battling with in terms of going for a Gurley or Gordon. Without question a later round RB will come through with great numbers that will be near or above the early picks.

However, I think the position is devalued because most teams have two or three guys picking up the slack, but the position is still very important. There are not many bell cow runners.

I happen to think Gurley and Gordon are two of the best players in the draft.

I wouldn't touch an injured Gurley with a ten foot pole that high. Drafting is a lot about risk management.
Gordon I like but feel we have major needs at cornerg, and LB. We also need a top receiver.

With the rules nowadays Jimmie Johnson may be right? Your examples are from a different era. Had Seattle won the SB last year you could've pointed to Lynch.

Lately in the actual game runningbacks have not been a huge factor but getting to superbowl many teams have relied on their runningback.

Timmy Smith was a 5th rd draft pick, and a mediocre running back. Timmy Smith racked up huge yards during Super Bowl XXII, but the consensus was that it was more because of the Redskins o-line. The Redskins o-line opened massive holes, and just about any scrub running back could have had a huge day.

So the Timmy Smith example shows that you can often plug a scrub running back into a system, and still do well.

wasnt saying he was good, just saying he played great in superbowl

Gordon will be a bust. Gurley might be OK but too risky, I would hesitate on him even in the second round let alone at 14.

But even if they run the ball and win the game, that team got there with defense. Give that team an average defense and there's no way Lynch can make up for that. On the other hand give Rodgers any defense you want no matter how bad and the Packers are still contenders.
