No Dolphins defensive back was more impressive in offseason work than Smith, who enters the final year of his contract and could earn a lucrative deal with a big year.

“I’m getting better,” he said. “My whole thing is to let the game come to me rather than trying to force things. [Former defensive backs coach]Todd Bowles taught me, before he left, to relax and do whatever it was that got me here. Where I've really improved is staying low out of my breaks.” He generally has improved his technique, something former teammate Yeremiah Bell implored him to do.

Smith, who lost 24 pounds this offseason, cut his dreadlocks, largely to reshape the way he presents himself. “It’s all about how you’re perceived on and off the field. I want a more professional, mature approach. The coaches like it.”

Pro Football Focus ranked Smith 105[SUP]th[/SUP] of 109 cornerbacks for 2011 and charged him with five touchdowns allowed and a 90.8 quarterback rating in his coverage area. But he finished strong, with two interceptions in his final six games, after producing one in his first 41. If there was any chance Richard Marshall would start ahead of him, Smith has seemingly eliminated that possibility.

Odrick, meantime, has adjusted well to end in a 4-3 defense - a position he played some as a freshman at Penn State. He had a sack in Saturday's scrimmage and has been stout against the run throughout training camp.

“Sean Smith asked me how I like the defense,” Odrick said. “I said my position is more fun because there’s nothing stationary about the job. I get to do more.”
Odrick had five sacks in 596 snaps last season (he was rated 20[SUP]th[/SUP] of 32 3-4 defensive ends by PFF) and said double figure sacks is a “realistic” goal. He probably will shift to tackle on third downs. At 302 pounds, he’s bigger than traditional 4-3 ends, including 258-pound Cam Wake.

“There are not many 300-pound d-ends,” Odrick said. “People would expect less of you being a bigger guy on the edge. But it helps in setting an anchor in the run game.”
Plus, the Dolphins believe he’s athletic enough to get to the quarterback from that spot.
“He’s a very talented guy, unique in a lot of ways,” defensive line coachKacy Rodgers said. “His athleticism is going to help him make the adjustment to doing that.”

Misi had 2 ½ sacks in his first six NFL games but four in 22 games since, though he often was used in coverage last year, allowing 11 completions in 19 passes against him.
Defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle said Misi is making the biggest adjustment of any player in this new defense, because he will be playing a lot more off the line of scrimmage (as a SAM linebacker) after playing on the line last year.

"It has been difficult, real challenging," Misi said. "But I'm liking it. I have a chance to make more tackles. I'm going to work a lot harder to be a better player than in the past."
Misi's solid camp so far includes an interception return for a touchdown early in camp and a sack in Saturday's scrimmage. “We’re excited about his progress,” Coyle said. “He’s improving every day.”

CBS analyst and former NFL MVP Rich Gannon spent 90 minutes in Dolphins quarterback meetings last week and was struck by Ryan Tannehill’s “knowledge, his answers, his assertiveness. There’s uncertainty with a lot of rookies, but not him. You love his athleticism and toughness, his footwork, his mechanics. He may not be where Andrew Luck is, but he’s a lot further along than a lot of guys coming out. He'll be a really fine player.”

A trio of Dolphins responding well to challenges; Gannon impressed with Tannehill

Dolphins coach Joe Philbin hasn’t publicly challenged many players in his first seven months, but Jared Odrick, Koa Misi and Sean Smith are clear exceptions.During the spring, Philbin made clear he wants to see Odrick “really step up and emerge in year three”; called for Misi to “be more productive and make more impact plays"; and challenged Smith to be steadier, not great one minute and deficient the next.Their response, so far, has been encouraging. All three have produced strong camps and solidified starting spots.

O'Drick might be a special player with his size, speed, and motor. His QB sack dance is hilarious!

I hope Misi has a hard head to play 4/3 LB. I fear that he will play like Crowder the matador instead of making the bone crunching tackle.

I hope the report about Smith is true. He seemed to play to far off the speedy receivers and then come back for the break up. He gave up a lot of completions early but got better later in the season. Hopefully the new system suits his style better.

he cut off those nasty, goofy dreds!!!

sounds like mr. smith is becoming a man and FINALLY gets what it takes to be a pro on and off the field.

hats off to him and i am rooting for his success this year instead of hoping for his perma-benching.

takes a LOT of guts to go against your peers dress codes and make a DRASTIC change in your appearance. in 1984 i could tie my hair in a pony tail and tuck it into my belt in the back. i played music for a living and it had its place but as i grew older and and began to delve into the adult world, i realized fighting the status was useless and holding me back in life. like it or not, right or wrong, we ARE percieved by our appearance and a first impression is the one that sticks.

so, one day i decide it time to get rid of a few feet of hair. i still played music [still do] and it was a scary decision to face my friends with my new cropped look [didnt go buzz cut, but i wasnt getting floor grime on my hair any longer]. and YES, they were shocked and i received a lot of the expected "awe, dude, yer going straight now? gonna go get a suit and tie?" etc.......

so i know what a huge decision this was for smith. that takes guts and a LOT of intestinal fortitude, and most of all...... MATURITY!!

hopefully this will rub off on some others [ya feel me omar?]

I kind of get the feeling that Odrick's physical talent is not fully appreciated. That guy is exceedingly fast and quick for his size- I think that he will be a terror at base 4-3 DE and sliding into DT on passing downs. His movement skills for a guy who is 300 lbs or a bit north of that are pretty amazing. He can definitely apply some pass rush, and having Vernon and Westerman to help out Wake in that regard will be a big improvement imo.

I remain unconvinced on Odrick's position switch but I can swallow the progress of the other two.

Barry Jackson is right about something. There aren't many players that are Odrick's build playing DE in a 4-3. Red Bryant is even bigger than Jared, Lamarr Houston and Leger Douzable are the same size. Jonathan Fanene and Cory Redding are about 10-12 lbs lighter. The problem there is the only one of those that anyone would boast about as being a great player is maybe Houston, and A) He is MUCH more athletic than Odrick despite being the same size, and B) Even he only got to the QB for a sack 3 times in 2011. The five players above combined for getting to the QB 15 times in 2011...an average of 3 a piece. Yet, Odrick thinks double digit sacks are realistic? I'm gonna go ahead and bet against that one.

Everyone else playing that position is generally 20-30 lbs lighter than Odrick. For a reason, IMO.

I never understood why Odrick was being put at end in this defense, I think he's a much better fit as a rotational DT. With Solai, Starks, Odrick and McDaniels at that position it would be the deepest area of the team and give us one of the most stout middle front 7s in football IMO.
We should have put Misi and Vernon at the other end spot outside of Wake. Misi is pretty useless but he is a better fit than Odrick at end, and maybe Vernon turns into something special.

smith dropping 24 lbs i think that will really help...his games finesse anyways...odrick like i said prior 300 lbs is a lot of weight as a 43 end...i think he would have been better suited stamina and explosion wise in the 275-280...i still think though that he can produce 8 sacks all told shifting inside in the nickle...they should have moved misi to off the los at lb a year ago

have to really like what rich gannon says about tanny in the film room...it just keeps getting better and better it seems...

three guys i can't wait to dig into how they look in the preseason opener hogan, wade, and russell...want to see if any of these guys deserve a spot on the 53...upside/tools etc...i'll throw les brown in that group as well...

good read...Sean needed to drop that weight if he wanted to stay anywhere near the smaller, quick twitch WR in the league....I'm not a Misi fan but I hope he can step it up as well.

I think Odrick can indeed get 7 - 10 sacks, but we'll see.

i expect odrick to dominate from the end position. he is 302 pounds but will have the production of a 275 pounder :)

I think Odrick could be baby sitting the DE position until Miami finds a better fit in the upcoming off season via the draft or F/A. I love Odrick but in the 4-3 it's his run stopping prowess that will make him, not rushing the passer. He is a classic 3-4 DE as we all know and perhaps an even better pass rushing DT in a 4-3. None the less Odrick is one of my favorites.
