Barry Jackson Sports Buzz: A trio of Dolphins responding well to challenges

Any chance he actually ends up playing more snaps inside than on the end? We're planing on moving him inside on passing downs, and we tend to play more nickel than base in today's NFL. If you add to it that we're going to play multiple fronts, I can see the actual snaps at end being split pretty evenly between him and Vernon etc.

If Odrick anchors on obvious run downs, provides a little pressure from multiple spots on passing downs and moves around effectively, we have to be happy with what we're getting.

They also rank Fasano as a top 5 TE..

Oh and what about the year Smith was 2nd behind Revis in coverage stats? Were you quoting PFF then? Nope..Have a nice day..

Not my PFF quote ... just threw it in because its the quote provided in the thread of his current stats.

However, here's MY Quote: ... little conjugation on his suckage ... his new contract will tell it all, but a tiger doesn't change its stripes ... not even a skinny one!! lol

Sean Smith DID SUCK
Sean Smith DOES SUCK
Sean Smith WILL SUCK

He's OK, but he's got to step up his game if we're to become a winning team!! ... like alot of our guys!!

odricks gonna play more in space at de...conditioning wise at 300 lbs its gonna take a toll unless he's in out of this world shape...he could have easily played a very stout 43 de at 280 lbs...and that also would have helped him be even quicker off the ball and with his short area lateral quickness and agility when he shifted inside in the nickle...i don't think he's gonna be a poor fit at end for us by any means but i don't think he's the ideal fit for it either...he's a 43 dt best fit all the way...a guy that works in a phone booth...hand use short area quickness and lateral agility all strengths of his game...

As a 4-3 DT Odrick's lateral quickness would help him quite a bit on stunts, but playing DT wouldn't really take full advantage of what this guy has to offer in terms of speed and quickness imo. To me, he's kind of a rarity- I've watched him and thought to myself, man, this dude has some serious wheels. You combine that with his run stopping ability and what I see, personally, is a potential Pro Bowl Defensive End. I think that Odrick is a stud, and that his numbers and play will reflect that this year. I think that he'll be a cornerstone of our defense, as a base DE and rotating in to DT on obvious passing downs. His skill set is pretty remarkable in my book.

also i don't know that westerman and vernon could handle a heavy load from the jump as 43 de on first and second downs if you moved odrick into a dt rotation with starks and solia...we already have one now 43 de who i think teams are gonna run right at in cam wake yeah he gained some weight but guys are gonna lean on him a lot more than they did as a 34 olb i think the best thing to do would be to give odrick some run at end on first and second downs but rotate vernon and westerman with wake and odrick to give both a blow here and there and save their legs some for the pass rush on 3rd down...

odricks lateral quickness and quickness off the ball isn't about stunts it's about shooting gaps and being in the backfield...odrick is a penetrating interior player at his best as a 43 de his speed is not gonna stand out off the edge he's gonna do most his damage there with power and hand strength and hand usage...his lateral quickness also is not gonna stand out at end against more athletic and high end feet tackles...where that quickness and agility really stands out is on the inside against guys with average feet and average get off the ball and slow lateral movements thus they play on the inside where his penetration blows up blocking schemes and play design...

you wanna see a pretty remarkable skill set at that kind of size take a look at jj watt...that's the prototype...34 de i know but thats a remarkable football player...better skill set than odrick

Exactly. Cam Wake was a question mark as per defending the run at OLB- now he's a DE, big question there. Odrick is a BIG plus as a jumbo run stuffing DE in a 4-3. The defense can let him be and help out Wake as needed against the run. And again, imo his movement skills for a 300 lb guy are striking, and I think he'll generate significant pass rush as a DE and DT in the passing downs.

I like JJ Watt quite a bit, saw him light up Ohio St. when I was keying on Carimi- hell of a player. This whole thing with Odrick- his lateral quickness is great and as you said he shoots gaps extremely well. But that quickness will be used quite effectively imo with inside swim moves and whatever else at DE, including edge rushing atound OTs. He's not a 260 lb Cam Wake or Charles Haley, that's a given and in my book a good thing- we already have a great pass rushing DE who is suspect against the run. My point is simply that i've rarely seen a guy of that size move so well, and I think that he can bring some heat from the outside at DE as well as be a cornerstone against the run and a situational DT. I think that the whole subject is being overanalyzed, maybe by me most of all. The dude can move like a mamm jamma for a 300 pounder, bottom line. He'll be fine at DE and maybe he'll trim 10 or 15 lbs, who knows. Al I know is that I feel fortunate that we have him as a DE.

ps also as per Odrick's quicks and his ability to shoot gaps/get into the backfield- good points, but with him I see more than that- I see flat out speed. I don't know what his 40 time is and I don't really care, although I'm pretty sure that someone will post it now. What I see in him is a 300 pounder flying aroung to the point that I think to myself, holy s***, this guy is fast. DE fast moreso that DT fast. He's going nowhere as a base DE, and my over/under on sacks for him this year is 8.

Mario Williams plays at nearly the same size. Reggie White also did. Not claiming that Odrick is as athletic those two, but a DE that size playing well in a 4-3 is not unheard of.

he cut off those nasty, goofy dreds!!!

sounds like mr. smith is becoming a man and FINALLY gets what it takes to be a pro on and off the field.

hats off to him and i am rooting for his success this year instead of hoping for his perma-benching.

takes a LOT of guts to go against your peers dress codes and make a DRASTIC change in your appearance. in 1984 i could tie my hair in a pony tail and tuck it into my belt in the back. i played music for a living and it had its place but as i grew older and and began to delve into the adult world, i realized fighting the status was useless and holding me back in life. like it or not, right or wrong, we ARE percieved by our appearance and a first impression is the one that sticks.

so, one day i decide it time to get rid of a few feet of hair. i still played music [still do] and it was a scary decision to face my friends with my new cropped look [didnt go buzz cut, but i wasnt getting floor grime on my hair any longer]. and YES, they were shocked and i received a lot of the expected "awe, dude, yer going straight now? gonna go get a suit and tie?" etc.......

so i know what a huge decision this was for smith. that takes guts and a LOT of intestinal fortitude, and most of all...... MATURITY!!

hopefully this will rub off on some others [ya feel me omar?][/QUOTE

It's unfortunate that in this day and age, we still put so much importance on societal norms of what is appropriate and inappropriate for appearence etc.....your hairstyle, beliefs or values should not impact the way you are viewed as long as you are respectful of others....I hope Smith cut his dreads from a personal standpoint and not because he is worried about how others percieve him.....its not about appearences but changing who you are and maturing from the inside.....takes more guts to be yourself and mature at the same time,,,,,,just my 2 cents
