Barry Jackson: Tannehill's Worrisome AFC East Issues

Likely, Tannehill will get the benefit of the doubt. He'll likely get a new coaching staff with a new OC. But, you better believe if the Dolphins are in a position to get a top notch Qb in next years draft. They will!

Tannehill, Will have one more season after this one to prove he can deliver.

I think Jackson summed it up well. RT has to step it up. The Jets are beatable for us this week and we should expect a better performance from both RT and the offensive game plan to get us more points.

Also interesting comments about a possible offseason OC change. I definitely think that is very likely.

If there is a very talented QB available, they have to look at it. I think they QB's will fly off of the board at the top of the draft and none will be there, however.

I keep saying this. I like RT. I think we have seen some good things and there is a ton of room to grow. He is a smart and tough kid. Sometimes he makes some amazing throws. With all that said, he just needs to get better. An example would be Jackson's article. Play well vs. a good AFC East defense and get a win. That is progress. Stop coming up small in these spots.

Granted these are team issues, but I do not care anymore:
Improve on 3rd down
Get better vs. AFC East
Come up bigger in 4th quarters

Another weak, regurgitate the same crap article.

When does the starting quarterback stop playing his worst against the teams he plays the most?

He had a fine game by the passer rating standard used in the article the last game against the Bills. How's that work out for the team? The defense decided to give up a crap load of rushing yards and 11 of 12 passing to a poor passer. They decided that Sammy Watkins should have his best day as a pro.

I like the passing mentions of his teammates:

(His teammates obviously also shoulder a lot of the blame for that 7-15 record).

Yes, his offensive line deserves a share of the blame for Miami’s offensive shortcomings in division matchups; Tannehill has been sacked 36 times in his past 12 games against AFC East opponents.

You can – and should - blame his pass protection and, to an extent, his receivers for part of that.

Sounds like the drivel around here. Admit the line sucks, admit the coaching sucks, admit the defense fails to show up in critical games, BUT....

But at some point, the franchise quarterback cannot continue to be at his worst against the opponents who know him best.

Has he never heard the phrase about the definition of insanity?????

RT needs an offense that runs the ball, he can throw off of play action, bootlegs and has routes that have short to intermediate routes predominantly.

I am at a loss on what to do with the line as Albert, Pouncey and James are more ZBS fits while Turner is a more of a power guy. I would love to see more of a power scheme. I think Albert could do it, personally. Not sure where James fits with it.

Interesting decisions this offseason.

Definitely want to move from Moore as backup, would rather have a guy with upside come in if Tannehill goes down or falters.

Tannehill has had issues vs. the east but the entire team has been an abomination vs the east under Philbin.

I agree Dayton

It not just the QB play.....it is the whole package. This is why I'm thinking more and more that an OC change will occur at the end of the season.

RT will get the new coach and OC. However, he is not killing off that next staff. For RT's career sake in Miami, he has to start producing under Lazor and for that matter Campbell. He is going to get a rep as a coach killer.

I could care less about producing in fear of his reputation.....he needs to produce because he is getting paid to do so. It's his job.

These are two separate issues in my mind. Issue 1. RT needs to play better. Issue 2. The offensive team needs to do the things necessary to make RT successful and to score more points. Neither are happening right now.

It could for the pool of potential coaching replacements, but RT will be done to his last coach in Miami next year IF Campbell is not extended after this year. RT needs to produce this year. I like the guy. He has some traits that I like, but he has plateaued right now and needs to get better.

I know stones will be tossed at me, but if Mike McCoy is fired in SD, he would do great work with RT as an OC.

I don't disagree with that at all. Just the rationale of why.

I think we are saying the same thing about RT. Good kid, lots of potential and not showing it. Regarding coaching, I don't think Lazor is helping RT and his lack of commitment to the run and not taking advantage of things that are working is getting old as well. We aren't going to fire RT....but I'm thinking it is more and more likely that we do make a change at OC.

RT needs to produce this year.

I don't expect to see much more improvement this year. Jackson, in my opinion, points out the main reasons. I think part of the reason he (the offense in general) struggles against the teams we face the most is because of the offensive system we run. You think a Rex and Bill can't figure out this Lazor offense?

You construct an offensive line that can't handle the D-lines in the division and expect success on offense. I do agree that Ryan needs to play better but your asking him to rise above the line and OC situation - it's too much for him to overcome.

I am hoping we can give him a real QB coach and New OC next year and see what happens. If you can find real competition for him fine Moore is probably gone, Logan is what a project? Your not drafting at the top of the draft because there are too many awful teams this year so don't even think that's a consideration of a top tier QB prospect.

Here's my 2 cents. I have always supported Tannehill as he is our QB. He has shown some flashes. Imo the problem is he doesn't ever get mad. Let me explain. When things don't go right for Brady he's mad and it shows. Sometimes your QB has to take charge. He needs to get on the receivers from time to time. He needs to get on the oline from time to time. Too many times something goes wrong and yet by the look on his face you would think he feels it's no big deal. Now I'm not saying for him to yell at people every time something goes wrong but he seems to accept the bad things way to easy. Marino was so competitive. Tannehill seems to be ok regarless of how the game is going. You can't be a leader that way.
