DAVIE - YouTube fans became enamored with Reagan Mauia when he burst through a wall after a practice at Hawaii and proclaimed himself to be the "Juggernaut."

When James Harvey Grigsby was born, his grandmother dubbed him "Boomer," and then he grew into the moniker. He became a quasi-cult figure after being featured on HBO's Hard Knocks last year with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Boomer vs. Juggernaut. Sounds like the next superhero movie or Ultimate Fighting Championship bout.

It's not. It's two converted defensive players immersed in a friendly, yet intense, battle for the Miami Dolphins' starting fullback job.

"I have the utmost faith in Reagan's toughness, but I refuse to back down," said Grigsby, who, at 5 feet 11 and 250 pounds, is an inch shorter and 10 pounds lighter than Mauia, a sixth-round pick last year.

"That fight would turn into some biting. We'd just get street and medieval, or it could come down to who hit first."

Grigsby has shown himself to be a fighter, while Mauia hasn't. He is very likely going to be gone unless he does something spectacular in the preseason.

Mauia has been the better blocker but Grigsby seems to be better in the other facets. He is also a special teams hero I guess. Pretty much from day one its been made clear that the new regime wants guys who are versatile and can play special teams. So Mauia is going to be the odd man out, especially if he can't learn to catch the friggin' ball.

i think thats a perfect idea.. lets let them ufc it to see who gets the spot..

or let the rb's pick

Are we sure that Phins will only keep 1 FB? Parcell's Jets and Cowboys typically carried 2 FBs, whom rotated based upon if it was a running or passing play.

Mauia may be a better blocker that some of OL that will make the roster. Moreover, the projected OGs (Smiley and Thomas) are considered straight-line blockers and not pulling guards. This may make a blocking FB essential for a team that is expected to run the majority of plays.

IIRC, Grigsby focused on offensive sets exclusively during the 1st week. Perhaps, the Trifecta wanted to evaluate his atheticism to be a passing protection/release into the flat player. If so, he may be competing against the lowest rank TE, RB, or LB for a roster spot.
