Battle to Watch: Tight Ends

Athletic? I wouldn’t call him athletic at all. Lol
Hahaha are you serious lol??
Dude ran mid 4.5, 40+" vert at 6'5" at 250 pounds, that's athletic af!! You're brain dead if you can't understand that lol.

Doesn't mean it translated well to pro football, but MG is very athletic.

He was never able to translate that onto the football field. He looked like a deer on ice 99% of the time. Couldn’t block. Couldn’t break a tackle. Couldn’t get separation. And dropped more crucial passes than he caught.
But he was athletic, but as far as you enlightening
us about his football play, everyone knows what
you've said to be ''mostly'' true.

As far as stating '' he dropped more crucial passes than he caught.''
18tds with Miami...8 dropped passes...wrong again

He looked like a deer on ice 99% of the time.
yet managed to catch 231 passes while on ice
actually very impressive but still wrong on your behalf
This past season the ''Giraffe Gesicki'' had 65 receptions
with a catch % of 78.3% which is damn good

as for blocking or breaking a tackle those traits
were and still non existent

The fact remains you were rong
when you said he was not athletic

Good luck with your research

I haven’t really watched him much since he left Miami.

But in 2022, he was ranked 30th in receptions for a TE and something like 25th (out of those 30) for catch percentage (61%). And he had like 90 YAC. (Not good) And he was ranked top 20 for number of routes ran that season.

His athleticism didn’t translate on the field here. And if you can jump high, and that’s about it, you’re not athletic for a football player. And he dropped crucial passes.

How big of a season did Jonnu Smith have for Miami in 2024? Well, after a slow start, he ended up with 884 receiving yards. That was the most ever for a Miami Dolphins tight end. Here's the top 5 in Miami's history in terms of receiving yards:

1. Jonnu Smith 884 yards (2024))
2. Randy McMichael 791 (2004)
3. Mike Gesicki 789 (2021)
4. Charles Clay 759 (2013)
5. Gesicki 703 (2020)

Hi, this thread is about the current tight end room / competition
True, but the first part of the OP was comparing Jonnu Smith's numbers to those of TEs with the most receiving yards. So, my mentioning McDaniel's poor use of Gesicki was basically saying that Gesicki might have been on that list again in 2022 if McDaniel knew how to properly use him.

I can agree with you on this, because Gesicki wasn't exactly worthy of being tagged. He ran like a baby giraffe and was easily tackled by small DBs... he was definitely no Gronk! All he could do was catch, and 99% of the time as soon as he caught the ball the play was over.

And, he sucked as a blocker, which is why I just can't understand why McDaniel wanted him to block.

Edited to add:

Silly me forgot something very important! If you put a TE on the field who doesn't block, then the defense will know that it's probably going to be a pass. So, on one hand it would make sense that if you're going to put him on the field, you'd have to at least occasionally make him block. Okay, I got that part wrong.

However, OTOH, if I were in charge, knowing that Gesicki was on the roster and getting 11 million but can't block worth a ****, I would have changed his jersey number to that of a WR and ONLY used him as a receiver. I see now that wording my post this way explains my reasoning better than just saying that you should never use him as a blocker. I feel that since he was already on the roster and getting paid, might as well make the best of a bad situation and change his position to WR for the season, and then cut him at the end of the year.
Too bad it took you four posts in a row to finally get there.

I posted before thinking it through completely... it happens. And, I can admit when I made a mistake or was wrong. OTOH, I wasn't wrong when I said that since he was already on the roster and getting paid, Gesicki should have been used strictly as a receiver and not as a TE, and his jersey number should have been changed to reflect that. If the guy can't block, he should never have been drafted as a TE.
