Much has been said about the level of competition BYU plays against. Clearly, this is a valid argument. It shouldn't be used to knock QBs though - many of the best QBs in the game come out of non-BCS schools.

Accuracy is extremely important when going up against top notch defenses. There is no substitute. Not to bash Quinn, but he will struggle in the NFL if he cannot "thread" passes.

Anyway here is a link to a video of BYU vs #15 TCU to illustrate Beck's performance and accuracy against high level competition. A couple of passes were a little off the mark, but most were on the money hitting receivers in stride.

A little background on TCU - they had an average offense, but they had one of the best defenses in the nation. They were ranked because of their stingy defense, while their offense was "adequate."

The game was played on the road at TCU.

I wonder if Beck could be our starter on opening day, not sure if he's ready but I'd rather have him in there learning from the start then have Lemon or a unheathly Culpepper in there

Maybe he could, but it may not be the best idea

There's no question that he'll need to make an adjustment to the NFL. However, he will get a lot of time in the pre-season games, so we'll probably get a good idea of whether he is ready or not.

If he starts from game 1 I think it will be a rough few games for him at best.

i have watched alot of film and i am sold on john beck and if we dont get green i wouldnt mind him coming in and starting if he beat out the other two in preseason and just go with him if hes been performing the best he should start

1) All those talks about a weak arm just aren't accurate. I'm definitely not a professional talent scout, but I do know one thing. Anyone that can get that much zip on a ball with a short-armed quick release has a good enough arm to play in the league. Not too mention his accuracy looked good (mostly wide open receivers though). He was also under pressure in quite a few of those throws. He seems to have good pocket presence, and best of all he has guts.

2) Starting him the 1st game would be a mistake. We're not going to win a superbowl this year, so why not let him really learn the system/speed of the game/NFL environment before he gets in there. It will mean a lot for his future success. Green will definitely be there week 1 anyway.

GO PHINS!

I too think it would be unwise to have John Beck as our starter at Washington for the season opener. I'm not a big fan of throwing rookie QBs into the fire. Very few rookie QBs succeed under such circumstances. Tom Brady and Carson Palmer went on to star after learning the ropes from the sidelines for a year. Plus, our offensive line will be going through some growing pains, especially since I'll be shocked if Vernon Carey makes a sucessful transition to left tackle. I think John Beck can be good, but I don't want him to be shellshocked.

I agree.

culpepper said his knee was 90 percent, he said he should participate in mini camp in june or at worst training camp

i love john beck but theres no way he will start our season,,
First of all its daunte's job to lose,he will be healthy come training camp and if that comes to fuition then he will be our starter.

If daunte is not 100 percent then cleo lemon will be the starter of our team this year,,,i've been telling everyone that this will happen for months even thru all the trent green rumors,,he was nothing but an insurance policy for daunte,,,,,john beck will get his time but for now it is daunte's team with cleo right behind

I don't know about Pep, but I as well think Lemon has a good chance to start some games this year. Cam was raving about Lemon at the mini camp so I expect him to have a shot before we would throw Beck into the fold to early.

I'd rather not start him in his rookie year, but if it comes down to Lemon Vs. Beck due to injury I'd prefer to give Beck the nod. I think he can handle it.
