In their last "NFL Whispers" section PFW writes,

  • "Dolphins rookie QB John Beck told PFW that the plays he must learn to call in Miami aren’t all that different from his college days. “A lot of the things are similar to the things we did at BYU. But I think, first of all, the wording is the biggest difference. The wording is a little more wordier. Much more so than it was when I was in college. But a lot of the concepts are the same.â€Â
  • Word is the Dolphins believe promising rookie Samson Satele will have a faster learning curve at center than at guard and that’s a big reason why they moved Rex Hadnot, who had started 19 games at center for Miami the past two seasons, to right guard. If Hadnot stays at the ORG spot, it will mean that Miami will have new starters at all five OL positions in 2007."

My questions after reading this are: BYU=Phins offense? Learning to play center easier than to play guard?

There are comments on every team if you interested.

Good observations. BYU=Phins offense? Hardly. I think Beck is just BS'ing a little bit. He's just saying that passing plays are passing plays, there are similar underlying concepts in all of them.

Center being easier than guard? More complicated, that one. For Satele, it could be. I dunno. The Center gets to combo block a lot in the ground game. I think this could come down to experience. As a guard for Hawaii, he didn't get hardly any experience ground blocking in a way similar to what he would have to do as a guard for Miami. As a center for Hawaii, his ground blocking experience for some of those plays was probably more similar to even run blocking in Miami...and the run blocking might be easier anyway as a Center. So what they could be getting at is that Center is the position that exposes his experience weakness less than Guard.

Great news, I think! If the offensive philosophy is similar to BYU's, the chances of Beck being a factor on this team will occur much sooner. And given his age, that is a good thing. One has to wonder if his catching on this weel is due to his age and maturity/experience or intellegence.

Satele in the lineup, be it at center or guard, is a very good thing. We've had way too many misses from the draft in recent years. I also think, obviously enough, that if Satele starts at center he is going to be entrenched there long term.

The wording is a little more wordier.

It's totally inconsequential, but the grammar nazi in me cringed to hear our qb make this statement.

I think the main thing Satele will have to learn is making snaps to a QB who is not going to be in shotgun formation most of the time, like he was in Hawaii. But I like him at Center more than Guard. I am sure Beck will learn the terminology of the playbook pretty quickly.

I'm a grammar nazi too, but in this case my QB nazi self just wants my grammar challenged QB to make plays!

i sure hope Beck likes the playbook, so he can run it successfully for 10 years.

I'm just glad that Cam is trying to build our offence with draft picks.....Carey,Satele,Mormino,Esara and Toledo are all young and if it works out we could at last have an o-line that could be great together for the next 8 years or so.

Ozzy rules!!

We better hope our 2nd rounders can come in and play right away because if not we could be in for a long year. That includes Booker also!

Wordier---I love it!

All smart quarterbacks talk that way. It comes from years of crazy dialog, like; "red-28-veer, action-14-roll or 17-forward-blue".
Speaking that way off the field means football "speak" is ingrained in their brain...second nature. That's a good sign.
But it is funny!

Really? I thought it was because he excelled at RG before stinking it up at C.

Rex and Vernon were our only consistently good players on the o-line last year. so no
