During a conference call Tuesday, Bill Belichick said the thing that Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill does best is “control the game, manage the game, manage the offense.”

That description, of course, is generally viewed by media and fans as a quarterbacking pejorative. Like, “The guy isn’t gonna win you a game, but he’s usually OK at not losing it…”

Thirteen seasons ago, it was used to diminish the work of Tom Brady as the Patriots won their first Super Bowl.

It is, in Belichick’s view, a compliment.

“They give him multiple options on every play,” Belichick began when I asked him about referring to game management. “I think that means they’re giving him a lot of responsibility. He’s the one that has to, at the line of scrimmage, get them out of a bad play if that’s what’s necessary and then after the ball’s snapped decide what to do on the play whether it’s hand the ball off, keep it, keep it and throw it as the third part of the option which some of their plays have.

"I think that’s a lot of responsibility to give a player. They have a lot of confidence in him and he does it well and has done it well. Getting the team in the right play and making the right decision is about as much responsibility as you can possibly give a player. What else could you ask him to do?”
Belichick explained the general philosophy of the Dolphins offense as he sees it.

“Their offense, especially when they’re in control of the game is very much one that takes what the defense gives it,” he began. “They go where it’s light. A lot of the passes that they have are plays that take advantage when there’s a lot of guys in one part of the defense maybe to stop the run or load up on one thing they go somewhere else. There’s a lot of bubble screens, there’s a lot of look-type passes, slants, play-actions, the more of that you give ‘em the more of that they’ll take. The less of that you give ‘em, the more they’ll hand the ball off to Miller and their backs and grind it out that way.”

_

“The biggest thing for Tannehill is in those running plays, there’s a good part of the time there’s an option part of the play to keep the ball,” said Belichick. “And he does that with discretion but when he does it he usually hurts the defense. He’s ripped off some big runs so I think the thing he does the best is control the game, manage the game, manage the offense. They have multiple options on a lot of plays and he is picking the best one and I’d say he’s done a pretty good job of that. He’s a very capable runner, scrambler.
"He can also stay in the pocket and throw the ball on third-down, two-minute situations. They don’t want him to drop back and throw 45 times. It’s usually a combination of screens with another play whether it be a running play, one or two running plays with a pass option to the perimeter of the defense or something inside that will allow him to take a shot down the field if the defense is in close. He does a good job of getting them where they need to be.”

dont care, dont care, dont care....7-6 basically out of playoffs.....yawn

he will be game managing madden on his couch during the playoffs in a couple of weeks.

BB had a pretty good description of our offense there. "Take what the defense gives"

I think that's part of the reason we don't challenge the deep part of the field considering our protection issues. It's a spread offense looking for high percentage opportunities.

I never listen to what he has to say. Great coach…butters the opponent up.

Belichick .... "Keep doing what you're doing so we can continue owning the AFCEast."

I'm sure he's very happy with what we're doing considering that the only way they're beating us these days is Gillette Field officiating.

Bottomline you allow the defense to tell you how to play on offense. Thats TERRIBLE!!!
When your attacking you never want the opponent to tell you where to throw your punches...

Since coming into the league, Ryan Tannehill has just one less playoff victory than Aaron Rodgers and in that one victory, Joe Webb was the opposing quarterback, so I don't really count that one lol.

Tannehill has won two of the last three Dolphins-Patriots match ups, with the one loss coming when Miami blew a 17-3 halftime lead.

I don't care if it's war, sex or football; anyone who calls themselves a competent strategist first finds a weakness in their oppenent, then attacks that weakness with overwhelming strength. Basic stuff, really. For reference on how it's done, see General George S. Patton (WWII), or Nathan B. Forest (Confederate General, American Civil War), "Always be the firstest with the mostest."

If your opponent is protecting his body, you should punch him in the head.

so what he's describing is all the zone read...which i don't like...it does not develop the parts of a qbs game that make him a long term difference maker...has a short shelf life...he must be referencing our offense in the past when he says the qb has the ability to check into and out of a bad play...or he's referencing the fact that the qb makes solid decisions with the zone read ie when to hand it off when to keep it and when to throw it...but that means beans to me...you can teach any college kid the zone read as far as the smarts to play it

i'm seeing my pocket qbs strengths outside of his athleticism be nullified in this offense...and not much development for the long haul save for more reps against pass rush pressure and climbing the pocket up inside

i guess there's some progression growth that has come about in this get the ball out quick offense but not enough emphasis with it and the traditional pocket play by scheme...

WHy did he answer those questions? He is always so stale and short. Makes me wonder. He is saying all this while in his head he is thinking about the last 2 losses to us, and he's deciding the best way to not only beat us beyond recognition, but also how to embarrass us iin the most evil way ever devised.
You know that thing about Philbin letting up on our oppenents when we are winning? Well, here comes the other side of it this Sunday.
