Patriots’ recent draft history worst in NFL

Former Patriots draft
choice Chris Canty

How well a team drafts over a three-year period will very often be a major factor in how well it plays in the fourth year and will determine if the team is on the way up or down. We asked our experts who they believed did the worst job of drafting and using their draft picks in trades from 1997 through ’99.
1. New England  The Patriots were a unanimous choice as the worst drafters. Despite having what amounted to double drafts due to the losses of Bill Parcells and Curtis Martin, the Patriots blew top picks on players such as Chris Canty, Tebucky Jones, Rod Rutledge, Tony Simmons, Sedrick Shaw, Chris Carter, Ed Ellis, J’Juan Cherry, etc.

Hate to be the first to ask this, but what the point???....

The Pats are Lions, and we're they're prey every year. I can't, for the life of me, think of anything negative to say about them....

PHINZ RULE!!!!

The point is, everyone thinks it takes 10 years to rebuild a team etc, when it doesnt. It took Belichick 2 years to get them winning and it took Marvin Lewis 1 year to turn it around and they were walking into situations just as bad as Saban did. That is all. We cant blame Wanny forever.

The facts are, "it took Bellichick 7 years as a HC to win his 1st SB"...

It took Bellichick 4 years to have his 1st winning season (with Cleveland 11-5)...He took over an Offense that ranked 27th in Point Scoring and improved it in his 4th year to 11th...then his down fall was the next year where his Offense again went down to 26th...he failed misserably going 5-11 his worst year as HC then...

Bellichick took over a team (NE) that was 7th in Points Scoring in 1999. He needed to work on his Defense...and his team was 5-11 his 1st year...unlike Saban's 9-7...

Lewis took 3 years (3 drafts/FA), not 1 year, to help improve his team...Lewis was 8-8 in both 2002-2003... He worked both Defense and Offense to help the team over the hump. It took Palmer who was drafted in 04 to push his team in the right direction...

So it took Lewis 3 years, with a QB change in year 3, to make the Post Season.... he was 3-5 halfway through his 3rd season...not looking good if you know what I mean...

Saban has to rebuild Offense and Defense alike, so more than 1 season is required if we were to use the same timeframe that these other coaches have used...

These are the facts..

So why can't we give Saban the same amount of time as these other coaches???

^^ Yea that. I agree we are not giving him enough time. To many people are impatient.

I'm willing to give Saban the length of his contract {2009} to turn it around for us. Even if that means having a few more losing seasons, as long as I'm seeing steady progress on a yearly basis, and a team that's playing with a purpose every week, I'm satisfied with that.....

PHINZ RULE!!!!

Belichick dismanteled his team 1st year-Saban tried to "tweak" it.

5. Pittsburgh  In ’98 the Steelers selected OG Alan Faneca, DL Jeremy Staat and OT Chris Conrad 1-2-3, and last year they took WR Troy Edwards, S Scott Shields and OLB Joey Porter. Thus far, all those players have been slow to develop, although Scott looked like a real keeper before he got hurt.

This is my favorite part actually. The guy is ripping on Alan Faneca and Joey Porter, who are now perrenial pro bowlers. This is more evidence that people need to LAY OFF Saban's drafts for awhile!! For all we know, Crowder and Jason Allen will be pro bowlers.

NO. If NS doesn't win a SB next year he should be fired! LOL

Nice post....

That one sentence is so true.
It's amazing the sheer numbers of people on this very site that just can't seem to comprehend this concept.

The new leadership of this team were handed a rebuild.
We all hoped they could patch it up quick but it's become pretty clear there were just too many missing pieces to fill in 2 offseasons.
