Bell Receives Opportunity

surprised saban didnt mention his 12 pack abs...as usual nub right on top of things good work bro

Great news here. Im pulling for Bell.

I am also pulling for Bell. Its funny how not even a couple weeks ago we couldnt stop worrying about our depth at Safety. And now with the acquisition of Schulters and the emergence of Bell, it actually looks like it could be a strength.

even though id rather have Shulters there...id rather Shulters learn more before being stuck into playing time....but id rather have Bell playing than Tillman

The question is who gets the fifth safety spot. Tillman is a lock more or less, Jones is a lock, Schulters is a lock, and Bell is a lock. I'd expect Bua to be back but I'm not so sure. It's either him or Akins I guess.

That is GREAT news imo, I was REALLY pulling for Bell since last year.

Question: We all know that Bell can hit hard, do you think that Bell could play SS where he would have a better chance of beating out Jones (whom I am not to keen on) than beating out Schulters???

I love this kid. I am pretty sure he's going to perform at some point in his career. But I'm glad Saban has given him a chance and kept him around.

that final spot is going to be interesting.

Honestly with Schulters signing and Bell actually healthy, I wouldn't say Tillman is a lock, although he's pretty close.

I think Bua gonna have to show something more than just great ST play. He's going to have to show he's got a future there to stick.

As bad as this sounds, if Akins is heathy, he's got a good shot at it. Akins is a fantastic ST player and has a longer contract. Now that contract could also work against him though but Chis does have some safety skills already.

Then there's Eiland and Hunt. Hunt of course played for Saban at LSU. And simply put, a safety named Jack Hunt simply sounds good :). Eiland though I know very little about. Both guys however qualify for the practice squad so it's likely one of them makes it there.

I've said this in another post but there could be some very suprising cuts. Everyone loves Bua but I think he's on the bubble. I don't think there's anyway we keep more than 5 safeties...and he may only keep 4 on the active roster with the problems at CB.

Question: it's on qualifying for the practice squad. After you've played a whole year on the active roster your 1st season (bua), can you still be signed to the practice squad for developement?

yes, he can but playing SS isn't just about hitting. One of the main responsiblities for the SS is covering the TE. I think Bell can do that.

It would be awesome if Bell emerged this year! With Shulters here as only a stop gap, it would be huge if Bell showed that he is the future at FS for us. It would just be one less thing we have to worry about for the next few seasons...

Nasty

I think Bell has a better shot at FS than he does at SS. Schulters is new and hasnt learned the defense yet. He also carries that over the hill tag. I personally think Lance will be fine but there is still a good chance he is over the hill now. Jones on the other hand played excellent under Bellichek and I have a feeling he will do the same in Sabans system. He is also a much better SS than FS and now that he has changed back you can expect some great play.

Bells size issue and frailty probably also make him a better FS than a SS where he would be playing more up at the LOS.

Bell could be good, I think it is funny how Saban referred to him as young despite the fact he is 27 years old now.

That's good to hear. Safety is a big question mark right now, so it would be good to see someone like Bell step it up.
