Bengals cut linebacker Vontaze Burfict after 7 seasons

The Cincinnati Bengals have released outside linebacker Vontaze Burfict, the team announced Monday.

"As we continue to build our roster for the 2019 season, we felt it best to give both the team and Vontaze a fresh start," Bengals coach Zac Taylor said in a statement. "Vontaze has been a good player here -- the team appreciates that, and I know a lot of fans appreciate that -- but our focus is on the future. Our goal is to build a successful team for the upcoming season, and we felt that making this change now was best for everyone."

He was suspended by the NFL to start the 2016, 2017 and 2018 seasons and has found himself in the league's doghouse several times for his style of play.

Burfict, 28, has missed 18 games over the past three seasons and wasn't considered a lock to return to the team despite signing a three-year extension worth more than $38 million before the 2017 season. He has been with the Bengals for seven seasons.

Was perhaps once a feared LB but not much today. Injury proned and unstable. But due to his age someone will pick him up.

Vontaze Burfict joins Raiders, says AB pairing 'all positive'

The Oakland Raiders have signed Vontaze Burfict to a one-year contract, a day after the veteran linebacker was released by the Cincinnati Bengals.

The deal is worth up to $5 million, according to NFL Network.With the Raiders, the 28-year-old Burfict will reunite with defensive coordinator Paul Guenther, who held the same role with the Bengals from 2014 to 2017.

Burfict also will be a new teammate of wideout Antonio Brown, and the two have a history This past season, Brown caught a pass over the middle and was tackled by two Bengals defenders when Burfict flew in with his right elbow, connecting with the then-Steelersreceiver's upper body and head area. Brown was down on the turf for a few seconds and was evaluated by the team on the sideline before re-entering the game. Afterward, Brown called the play a "nasty hit."
