They talked about how he grew up in a bad part of Oakland, and how he and his family were always hearing gunshots go off. He said he always felt safe because his Dad had always protected the family. So then one day he was having a cookout with his family, and somebody snuck around back and came out and shot his uncle while Davone was watching. A couple years later he was asked by his friends if he could give them a ride. He said sure, and when he got there to pick them up, he was instantly suspicious because they were carrying white bags. So he later said how stupid he was to not ask about them. Anyways, he was coming through an intersection, and there was a cop going the opposite way. The cop made a U-turn and pulled him over. They all got out of the car and the cops lined them up on the curb, and started taking the items out of the bags. They were pulling out things like laptops, playstations, and all sorts of expensive equipment. At that point, Davone knew where it had come from, and he could remember being so mad at himself for not asking about the bags.
He wouldn't take full blame for the stolen goods and got sentence to 13 months in prison. At the time, he was only 17, but turned 18 during his sentence. During the time he was 17 years old he was in a juvenile detention center. 3 months in, he was taken to jail. He recalled how miserable he was that because they kept him in there 23 hours aday, and if you slept through that one hour, you spent your entire day inside the cell.
He later got shipped to a youth rehabilitation facility. He wrote his High School football coach 3 letters, and the coach said he opened them up, read them, and through them in the trash. Davone talked about how disapointed he was because now even his coach had given up on him. Then he wrote his coach a 4th letter and told him he knew it was his fault. Finally, his coach wrote back.
Davone started running routes in a field all day long while he was in the rehabilitation center, and eventually started playing flag football. He tore up the field playing flag football, and his high school coach reached out to his college football friend, and assistant of Hawaii head coach June Jones. He Sent Jones tape of Davone in these flag football games, and he was impressed. After Bess had served his sentence, they sent him to Hawaii for a trip. He did not come back for about a year and a half. He played 3 productive seasons at Hawaii and decided to enter the NFL draft.
At the combine, he ran a 4.62. He was originally projected to be a second round pick, but this ended the chance of that. He went undrafted and was signed by the Miami Dolphins. Greg Cote talked about how he was at the Miami Dolphins training camp in 08 and said that Davone Bess and Chad Pennington stayed for hours upon hours after the team was done for the day, and they just practiced and practiced.
Davone Bess said that he view life kind of as track. Because they keep sending hurdle at you, and you just have to jump those hurdles and keep going, or else you won't succeed. It really showed how great of a guy Davone Bess is. He's been through a lot of ****, and he's still managed to wind up as a succesful story.
(tryed to include lots of detail, hope you don't mind)
