Best Kicker in Fins History

wasnt this a kick that gave us a jolt as we were down by 2 or 3 scores IIRC? We fed off the momentum and came back to win. Or have I confused it w the KC playoff game you recounted.

Yes. It was at the Meadowlands in 1989 and the Jets had Miami down 13-0 before Stoyo's 59-yarder. Both teams added touchdowns to make it 20-10 Jets at the half. Then in the 3rd quarter, Marino had a 78 yard bomb to Clayton, followed by a 65 yard bomb to Scott Schwedes. And that was all she wrote. I loved that game!

thanks for bringing a great memory like this back to life. Man those years were exciting. Dan led us to a number of come from behind, thrilling playoff wins. This one was up there along w '85 division round vs Cleveland down 20-3 in the fourth I think. For Dan was and always will be the ultimate f****ng BOSS!!!

I can not recall the circumstances surrounding the 59 yarder vs. the Jests other than the facts I mentioned. I think it was kicked just as the first half ended which was why Shula even tried such a long kick at a place that was notorious for failed attempts from beyond 50. I can not even remember if the Phins won that game.

As to your first part of the post, no problem. Those really are some great memories. I find myself thinking back to the good ole days of Marino lead Dolphins football from time to time. I have a few seasons worth of highlight clips from the old "Primetime" show with Berman and Tom Jackson. I break out the VHS on occasion and watch some of them.

The 94 season in particular was one of my favorites. There were some classic games that year, ending with the heartbreaking loss to the Chargers in the divisional round. The Chargers cheated us hard in that game and Stoyo missed that kick that Dan set him up for at the end, after the Chargers took the lead with just 22 seconds left. Marino got us in FG position in just ONE PLAY. Missing that kick was a nightmare as I had tickets to the AFC Championship game in Pittsburgh the next week. I was on cloud 9 at halftime, the Phins winning 21-6 and Im holding a ticket to watch Marino play for a trip to the Super Bowl in his hometown. That was the most disappointing day in the history of my Phins fan life.

oh man that must have stung. It was bad enough to watch it on TV - I probably sat there in a state of shock for like 8 hours straight w/out moving. That missed kick - oof. I would have given up an awful lot to see Marino play a playoff game in person!

I remember that game well. We did nothing on offense in he second half and the defense eventually folded. 20 years later and nothing changes. That was a heartbreaker.

That was a 58 yarder and it was in the first half of the game. I believe it was in the 1st qtr if I am not mistaken. At the time it was a playoff record. I do not know if it still stands.

The Phins trailed that game 16-3 in the 4th qtr, their lone points coming off that Stoyanovich kick. Then Dan started his MAGIC!!!!!!

The first TD drive started with about 12 minutes or so remaining IIRC. It culminated with a Sammie Smith 1 yard TD plunge. Smith did a lot of work on that drive and it ate a good chunk of clock. 16-10 Chiefs.

Then Marino gets the ball back late and with just about 2 minutes remaining, he hits Mark Clayton on a BEAUTIFUL throw low and outside where not only is Clayton, who was smothered by his defender mind you, was the only person with a shot to catch it, the ball placement set Clayton up for a great move to shake his defender and score after catching it just outside the 10 yard line IIRC. 17-16 Phins WIN! That is how its done in the playoffs and the clutch. Dan Marino.......... like a ****ING BOSS!!!!!!!

If im not mistaken the first score in the 4th was a td pass to one of my favorites, tony paige. Marino caught fire in that 4th quarter one of my favorite games from my childhood

Olindo Mare and it not even close.
Probably the best all around kicker we ever had.
he was strong on kickoffs, very accurate with distance and was exceptional on on side kicks.
