Wow. There are a lot of pissed off Dolfans out there. A lot of people seem to think that passing up Brady Quinn was a huge mistake. But I know nineteen people who would disagree:

1. The Oakland Raiders
2. The Detroit Lions
3. The Tampa Bay Bucs
4. The Arizona Cardinals
5. The Washington Redskins
6. The Minnesota Vikings
7. The Atlanta Falcons
8. The Houston Oilers
9. The San Francisco 49ers
10. The Buffalo Bills
11. The St. Louis Rams
12. The NY Jets
13. The Pittsburgh Steelers
14. The Green Bay Packers
15. The Denver Broncos
16. The Cincinnati Bengals
17. The Tennessee Titans
18. The NY Giants
19. The Jacksonville Jaguars

There is only one rule when it comes to selecting a player in the 1st round of the NFL Draft. Take the best player available. Well, if Brady Quinn was the BPA, then why did 19 teams pass on him? And don't tell me because they already have a QB. Would you pass on Peyton Manning because you already have Chad Pennington?

Think about it...

If Quinn was the BPA, then why did Tampa Bay pick Gaines Adams?
If Quinn was the BPA, then why did Buffalo pick Marshawn Lynch?
If Quinn was the BPA, then why did the Jets pick Darrelle Revis?
If Quinn was the BPA, then why did Jacksonville pick Reggie Nelson?

If Brady Quinn is the next Tom Brady, why would Green Bay pick Justin Harrell instead?

Not only did we pass on Quinn, but we passed on Drew Stanton, too. Maybe, just maybe, John Beck is pretty good.

Cam Cameron turned Philip Rivers, Drew Brees, and Gus Frerotte into Pro Bowl players. Gus Frerotte!!! Randy Mueller has drafted several QBs that have gone on to have a lot of success in the NFL. Our brand new QB Coach, Terry Shea, worked with Brady Quinn prior to the draft, so he knows everything there is to know about Brady Quinn. And we still passed.

If that doesn't tell you all you need to know, then you will never be convinced.

We'll either look back on this and say Cameron, Mueller, and Shea were geniuses or pulled one of the biggest bone-headed maneuvers ever in the draft.

As for Ginn, it's hard not to like the guy. Check out his highlights on YouTube...

I've never seen anything like it. If you look up the word "speed" in the dictionary, there would be a picture of Ted Ginn, Jr.

So then I thought, "Okay, well he's probably like a T.O. or Randy Moss and has a big ego and bad attitude." Wrong. Big-time character guy. Hard-worker. Team leader. He's a major, major upgrade over Welker as far as returning kicks. And I loved Welker. Speed vs heart. We'll see what wins.

They compare Ginn to Dante Hall and Desmond Howard. But they also compare him to Devin Hester. Maybe he won't ever be a #1 WR. But just sending Ginn on a fly pattern should free up Chambers to make more plays.

The more I think about the pick, the more I like it. They called Ginn a "reach" but I don't buy into that. To me, a "reach" is taking a guy who would have been there in the next round. Ginn might have been picked later in the 1st but he would have been gone by the time we picked in the 2nd.

Ginn vs Quinn. Only time will tell.

Right now, it looks like we might have made a huge mistake. But after last season, and the 1995 season when we had all those #1 picks as starters, I've learned my lesson. My expectations are neither positive or negative. I'm just going to wait and see.

nice post. The dolphins did say that they had beck rated as the second best QB. And now that we know the texans were going to take Ginn at 10 (according to adam @ nfl network), it shows why we got him at 9.

Well said. I have to admit that I thought Miami made a poor decision to pass Quinn, but as you pointed out a lot of teams (Jacksonville stands out) that could have used a qb upgrade did the same thing. Only time will tell and since I've never seen Beck and am not a scout, I'll trust our scouting department for now. Ginn is probably a bit of a reach, but he adds an electric element this offense needs.

Even more teams passed on Beck that also needed a QB, does that mean he sucks. Montana and Marino were passed over and they are the two best ever.

A strategic decision that appears to have paid off.

6 WR's were drafted in the 1st round.

We could have Quinn(#2 QB) and WR#7...

Or Beck(#3 QB) and Ginn (WR #2)
*****
My numbers are questionable. Phil Simms liked Beck more than Quinn.

Kevin Kolb got drafted before Beck.

Quinn could be 2 to 4. So could Beck.
********
3/2 or 2/7? Maybe WR was only 6 deep? Maybe a couple of those guys were question marks like Quinn?
********
We gambled... I like the gamble... we'll see if it was right soon enough.

injury

Anyone know more details about the foot sprain? Is it a Lis Franc sprain? Why so long to heal and why so varied reports on length of time? How can the Dolphins be so confident there won't be any lingering effects? If it is a Lis Franc sprain I understand they can be difficult to overcome. Why isn't the media getting these answers?

nice post, i agree that our staff looked hard at quinn, shea had real first hand information that few people could possibley match, cam is a quarterback man. we passed for a reason. i am pumped to have ginn and beck for our first 2 picks, i believe at the time picked they were both the highest rated players on our board and we landed them both. can't predict the future but i have high hopes for this draft to produce some solid if not excellent nfl players

I am okay with not taking Quinn. If the head coach didn't have confidence in him, then that is that. What I do have a problem with is we had a top 10 pick, and we didn't get a guy that will start on offense or defense this season. We have positions like CB, S, OG, OT, DT, and QB where are starters could use much improvement. If you don't see someone at #9 in the draft that could fill one of the holes your team has you get the hell out. I don't see that since I think guys like Okoye, Hall, Staley, and Grubbs could easily start for the Dolphins in 2007.

As it stands we are going to give Ginn an incredible signing bonus, and big salary for a guy who may start as a PR/KR if his foot heals as expected. He isn't going to compete with Chamber or Booker for the starting spots. If the experts are correct, and Ginn is as green as a WR as they say we will be lucky if he battles Derek Hagan and other for the 3rd or 4th spot. I think last year we put a lot of stock in someone's knee healing as it should, but that didn't work out to well. Anyone remember his name?

Different situation. There were ridiculous drug rumors being spread about Marino. That's why he slipped. And Montana was not a highly touted prospect such as Brady Quinn. Walsh discovered Montana.
