Question for the older Dolfans that remember David
Woodley.Neither was a great passer, but who was the
better athlete between him and Fiedler?

Sure Fiedler had a very good winning percentage, but Woodley was scrambling quarterback who led the team to a Super Bowl appearance - gotta be Woodley...

David Woodley FTW!! I seen old tapes when he played with the Phins.

Woodley and Fiedler were fairly similar but Woodley had Shula and that made him better.
What was it Woodley died of? Cancer, suicide? I remember it happening but not the cause.

Fiedler was quite an intelligent quarterback when he decided to scramble, he could never be described as a threat to take off but he knew when to run. He leads all Dolphins QB's with 10 rushing td's while he was here with us.

Come on woodley went to the superbowl on strike year. Fiedler was a better QB Woodley couldn't complete a pass to save his life.

After Liver transplant in 1992 and facing declining health David Woodley passed May 4, 1993 due to liver and kidney failure.

I have to go with Fiedler on this one.....former decathlete who worked very hard, neither one had a big arm but both scrambled fairly well. Fiedler really excelled at self sacrifice.

He was as tough as they come. If John Beck is willing to put his body on the line like that he could be really special.

David Woodley was interesting to watch, but Fiedler was better. Fiedler would of fared much better on an 80's Dolphins team than Woodley did.

Woodley. Fiedler had the benefit of playing with a dominant defense that kept scores low.

Fiedler - great heart

Jay Fiedler is really intelligent (probably one of the smartest Dolphins ever!). He had pretty limited natural passing skills (following Marino didn't make it easy), but I really admired his will to win. He was at his best when scrambling from behind in the final minutes. He was never afraid to run and give it all he had.

I watched every Woodley game he played and every Fiedler game played. Woodley had Shula during a time when Shula was still a genius of a coach - if you recall the '82 season (strike or no strike), it was the combination of Woodley and Strock (Wood-Strock) that got them to the SuperBowl. Shula would yank Woodley when he struggled, or he needed to come from behind to win that year. In the SuperBowl, for some odd reason he kept Woodley in too long - despite the fact that he did NOT COMPLETE A SINGLE PASS in the entire second half.

That said, I found myself begging for someone to put me out of my misery more when I watched Fiedler. He tried hard and had guts, but he had a fairie's arm. Woodley had a strong arm contrary to what some are saying here. Also, Woodley was a tougher runner, and he even caught a TD pass.

To be fair to Fiedler, he had the opposite of a genius as coach - Wannstedt. Fiedler might have thrived under Shula in the early '80's. The team was pretty much the same - great D, a decent running game and no receivers.

I liked watching Woodley. I cringed watching Fiedler. This is a tough one - I'll go with Woodley since he did get us to a SuperBowl - I know, not the greatest logic, but I gotta pick.

PS
Woodley went to Pittsburgh after the '84 season - signing the biggest contract in the NFL for QBs at the time. He had 2 sub-par years there, then retired. Had a liver transplant - he was an alchoholic and died 10 years after the transplant. His ex-wife said he drank an entire case of beer the night before the SuperBowl due to nerves... He had some social-anxiety disorder that probably wasn't recognized at the time - and so he drank. Right to the grave at age 44...
