Better coach: Wannstedt or Sparano?

They both suck but Wanny was definitely a better game-day coach. He is one of the worst personnel decision-makers of all time but he didn't cost the Fins too many wins with his in-game decision making or game planning. Wanny won when he had talent on the field although he could definitely be outcoached.

Sparano was just an awful coach that cost his team wins. The team got every win with Sparano in spite of him, not because of him. Sparano was outcoached in nearly every game that he managed. I don't think that we can even accurately evaluate Ireland up to this point because Sparano couldn't win with a legendary team, much less a rebuilding one. We have talent on our team that was masked by pure, unadulterated stupidity!

I dont remember if the Fins could perform the 2 minute offense under Wanny's watch but I know for a fact under Sparano 2:00 and the ball would = definate loss as time runs out while they run up the middle or connect on a 3 yard slant.

Thats the definition of a poor coach my friends...

I would definitely go Wannstedt, he took over in a very difficult spot and won a div title and a playoff game. Coming off the 62-7 loss w/ Jimmy quitting, Dan retiring, having Fiedler as the starting QB and winning the AFC East in 2000 was a great job. The team seemed to get worse every year but they were very limited offensively and the D's never showed up in big spots so it was hard to win w/ that roster but I thought he did a pretty good job w/ what he had to work w/.

Wannstedt and it's not even close.
Neither of them realized that you need a QB in the NFL to win...Feidler IMO was a better QB than Henne (although he didnt have anywhere the arm strength henne had)

Ricky williams was great at his peak but cost us 2 1st rounders and then became a head case...

We had no great receivers under Wanny and at this point we only have Marshall but until he starts catching the ball when it hits him in the hands in games that mean something he's useless...Gadsten used to make some amazing catches (he had to, Fiedler was throwing the ball)

Our O-Line miles away better under wanny, he could actually run the ball and not have to resort to the wildcat...that 1800 yard season should have been more...

I think the D still goes to wanny as we still had the no passing zone...

What really kept wanny from being a good coach was his lack of good drafts...

Wanny was miles away better than Sporano...

They were both very popular with their players. Maybe too popular.

They both had limited success.

Wannsteadt at least contributed to the defense, I never quite figured out why Sparano never could settle on a starting O-line. Wannsteadt always thought he had the best starting D players and didn't draft or bring in enough guys to compete and get better. Sparano maybe brought in too many O-linemen and never settled on the best guys.

I liked Tony better, but I hated watching him going bananas on the sidelines after every field goal. Also, the success we had under Tony was probably mostly due to Henning and the wildcat not to his coaching really. His coaching was what kept us under .500 most of the time.

I like Saban as a coach much more than both those guys. I KNOW that is not a popular opinion around here. :ponder:

Wanny never a called a timeout so the opposing team could get there offense on the field and score a td. He never called a timeout to stop the clock on a change of possesion either. He also didn't celebrate field goals like he hit the lottery. Sparano sucked !!!

No, but Wanny did but the ball in Jay Fiedler's hands instead of Ricky Williams who had over 150 yards rushing that day with under two minutes to go against the Pats in the last game of the season that would have put the Fins in the playoffs and knocked NE out. Needless to say Fiedler's incompletions left just enough clock for Brady to rip the Dolphin fans hearts out. Classic outsmarting yourself by Wanny. After the game he said they didn't run the ball because the Pats would be expecting it....Yeah Wanny and they couldn't stop it all day and you went with Fiedler over Ricky...what a disaster of a coach. Oh, and I believe the Pats won it all that year to rub salt in the wounds a little further.

Wanny was suppose to be a defensive coach and at least he had good defenses. Sparano was suppose to be an O Line guru but this area was a mess.

Wanny should never be near a "war" room or have anything to do with picking a QB. His attachment to Fiedler was really a killer. I wanted to just bang my head on a wall when he would repeat to the press "Jay Fiedler is our starting QB"

I remember one game was a defensive struggle at home against the Ravens. It was something like 3-3 in the final 2 minutes and the Ravens punt and the Dolphins have OK field position like maybe the 25 or 30 I don't remember exactly. Wanny decides to run out the clock and go to overtime. At home you could here in the background a chant of "Wannstedt Sucks!" I was laughing and I agreed. I wasn't dissapointed in his call becuase of the way the game was going, I was dissapointed that the Dolphins offense is still so crappy that it's probably a good idea to punt down here. For those with bad memories, Baltimore got the ball and fumbled which set a game winning field goal.

Similar to Sparano and Henne
