big changes coming to the offseason?

Another great find SR 7. Thanks. Personally, I'd definitely be happy about moving the draft up to February. I really think that the FA period should be after the Draft, and always have. It allows the worst record teams to select the best players available instead of drafting for need. Plus, as the article mentions, it would reward good scouting. I'm tired of having a headstrong coach force the selection of a poor player because he outranks the scout who had the good player rated higher.

I like things just how they are. Im in agreement of moving the Senior Bowl and East and West shrine game to tampa. That should really help them save money. The combine I'm all for moving that as right after the Superbowl. What worries me is moving Free Agency to after the Draft. We'll see, change sometimes is not for the best.

In response to a Pro Football Weekly report that the NFL is contemplating a move of the draft from late April to late February, multiple league insiders tell Howard Balzer of the Sports Xchange that no such move is being contemplated.

Said Falcons president Rich McKay, co-chair of the Competition Committee: “We’ve never discussed it. We’ve discussed the offseason calendar a lot, but there has been no discussion of moving the draft up.

“We had that discussion eight years ago, but I don’t think we’ve had it since then. We’ve discussed the calendar, but that wasn’t any of the things we discussed.”

Added Rams G.M. Billy Devaney, who previously worked under McKay in Atlanta: “This is the first I’ve heard of anything like that.”

It doesn’t mean that there aren’t people in the league who’d like to move the draft. But if the co-chair of the Competition Committee hasn’t even heard about the possible move, it’s highly unlikely that such a radical change would be adopted in the near future.

lol why would they move the draft? dont you think teams need time to have the kids from smaller schools come in and work out for them also

They'd move the draft because currently promising rookies can end up 2nd and 3rd string behind pricey veteran free agents. Those free agents may not have been taken on if the teams already knew they had the rookie they wanted at that position.

Currently, the schedule plays into the hands of free agents, they can hike up deals based on the need of teams. Having the draft prior to FA might rise the price of high end rookies but it'd bring free agent contracts a bit closer to sanity too.

The players association would not allow it I feel. It would mean that the demand for free agents would drop thus lowering the amount being paid for their signatures. The players are already un-happy at rookie contracts, so jerking them around further could well lead to an un-wanted strike.

I like it that way you already know what your team needs in FA... however, I dont like the part where it says that it will limit coaches imput and rely much heavier on the scouting dept.

I would love for the Senior Bowl and East-West Shrine game to be in Tampa. I would so go to both.

Let's not forget that we can trade down from any one of our picks in any round. We did last year in the 3rd round, passed up on Kevin Smith, and got Langford.

UPDATE: oops, meant to post this in another thread. Well, as for the topic, it makes sense to let teams draft first then fill out their roster with free-agency.

there's alot of good changes that could be made.... apparently the nfl has moved its focus to making the wrong kind of changes.... like having the probowl the week before the superbowl, and now, moving the draft to before Free Agency ??

Hopefully, moving they can couple a rookie salary cap with this scenario of moving the draft before the opening of free agency. In the long run, I think it would be better for the teams as well as the players. Too much salary cap is being eaten up by unproven rookies. I love Jake Long and am very excited that he is the anchor of our offensive line but I think it is ridiculous that he is or at least was the highest paid lineman in the league before he ever played a down. How is that equitable to the other 31 starting left tackles in the league?

That's crazy!!! You draft AFTER free agency because then you know what your holes are...if you drafted before free agency, you would then be screwed when you lost players you didn't expect to lose...and think about the price these guys would be charging when they know that you need them and you have no fallback...makes 0 sense to have FA after the draft...

Nonsense!!! A team with holes can always say, "we will fill the need in the draft." Imagine how much an FA would be charging if they went into negotiations with a team where they know that they just lost a player that wasn't expected to be lost...the FAs would own them. The team would have 0 bargaining ability...
