Bill Parcells, who drafted Chad Henne and Pat White for the Dolphins, says woe unto the team that blows a high QB pick
For the first time since 2007, the Miami Dolphins will run a draft without the wisdom of Bill Parcells in their war room.
But thanks to the fact Parcells has returned to the warm (and lucrative) cocoon of ESPN, we actually have far more access as a South Florida public to his updated thoughts than at any time over the past three years.
As such, it will be fascinating to watch Parcells on this 90-minute “Draft Confidential” special tonight on ESPN, starting at 9:30 p.m. To preview that show, Parcells went on “Mike and Mike” this morning on ESPN radio and spent two long segments sharing his thoughts on everything from the labor dispute to position priority on draft day.
With the Dolphins considering drafting a quarterback in the first round for the first time since Dan Marino nearly three decades ago, Parcells cautioned in general against missing on such an important (and expensive) selection.
“First of all it’s econonomic devastation, for one thing,” Parcells said on the air. “The way things are now, you’re stuck with a very, very high [salary] cap number for a player that’s not performing well for you. That’s not good no matter what happens, whatever position it is. But I think it’s more strongly felt at the quarterback position because the resolution to the most important position on the team is not in place. Economically it’s hurting you and on the field it’s hurting you.”
