Bates considers offer from Bills: The Bills have offered former Packers defensive coordinator Jim Bates their defensive coordinator job. He is going to take Wednesday night to think about it, but the Bills have the last defensive coordinator job available. The Texans are expected to hire Frank Bush and Richard Smith as co-defensive coordinators, and once that deal is done, the Bills are the last chance for a coach to land a defensive coordinator job. For the moment, Bates' decision is whether to take the Bills offer or sit out the season under the Packers paycheck.

I know that's what you are hoping. I thought Bates did a great job as interim coach with you guys in 2004 and with a no-name defense in GB.

I think that would be a great hire for the Bills. So, I hope he decides not to take the job.:)

No, it is what I really think. I read today that he turned down a deal from the Rams that would have gave him $1 million + per year to run their defense. I think the man has been sick of being a coordinator ever since he got a taste at being a head coach when he was with the Dolphins. He wants to be a head coach, and I really see him turning down this offer and aiming for a head coaching job either with an NFL team next January or a college team sometime late next year. Sitting out the year will give him more free time to perhaps pursue a college opening. Why else turn down a big contract from the Rams? Plus, I don't think the Bills would be offering a contract that big.

Does the word vanilla mean anything to you?

We have the talent to play vanilla as long as Nate Clements is kept.

We have been an all out blitzing defense, and it hurts us sometimes. Marv Levy loves DC's that dont blitz.

By the way, your defense went from top 10 every year to 18th under Saban.

we also lost Surtain... a HUGE part of our defense. Also, it took time for the team to learn the new scheme...

Bates' schemes are very vanilla and plain. His defense doesnt give opposing offenses lots of different looks.

However, he will bring alot of intensity to your defense, which can really improve the play of your players...

Lost Surtain. Started a rookie.
Lost both starting safeties from the previous year.
Two new starting OLB's. Started a rookie.
3 new starting DL.

We also installed a new system. Finishing 18th is quite an accomplishment when you consider everything.

Weren't teh Dolphish defenses in the top 10 every year he was DC? :confused2

His halftime adjustments were horrible. He's a decent coordinator but nothing great.

I'll take a top 10 defense every year, I dont care how they get there.

Before this year. You guys always had a better defense than us anyways.
