BLITZKRIEG
~LACUNA LEGIONS~
To start things off, the offense was practicing formations. Green was under center taking snaps, and this drill is basically just for the players to getcomfortable running plays. It's a simple drill really, and all of the QB's get their chance to get warmed up during this time....
On the other field you've got the punters kicking, the DB's / S's / and LB's working on their formations, and the DL over working some drills as well. This is basically a time for everyone to just get warmed up in my opinion, and there's not really all that much going on in terms of excitement....
I forgot to mention that it was about 90 out there this afternoon. Talk about brutal heat, it was scorching out there today!! Anyway's, back to the report....
After that, the QB's starting throwing some downfield patterns to the WR's / TE's / and FB's. There is no coverage ofcourse, and this is just another short drill they have in order to get everyone warmed-up. These are the simplest of throws, and you rarely ever see a drop during this drill....
The OL is over by themselves right now working together on blocking technique. They do this at the start of every practice session. It's a simple drill basically to get the loosened up, and ready for more difficult drills....
Now the QB's are running what they call "run to the ball drills". The WR's are running straight towards the QB's and they're throwing them the ball. It's basically used so the WR's can get use to catching hard thrown balls. There are a few drops here and there during this drill, but for the most part this is just another warming up session. It's short, and they only run it for a few minutes....
Now they go through their normal stretching session which lasts about 7 minutes. All they do here is stretch, and do some basic calisthenics.....
After the stretch session the offense starting running some reverse plays. They had all of the QB's get their chance during this drill, and there was real pressure, just the offense getting comfortable running the reverse bascially. It was the first time I have seen them run this drill, and they did pretty well from what I could see....
The DB's / LB's are over on the opposite field running INT return drills. They do this at every practice session, and I'm sure there will be even more of it once TC arrives. We've seen some INT's in camp already, so they've obviously done well running this drill....
Now the offense is going to work on their "no huddle technique". This is basically a hurry up offense, where they're trying to get down the field as quickly as possible. All of the QB's are getting an opportunity to run this drill, and since there's no real defense involved, it's a rather simple drill in my opinion. Green to Chambers / Beck to Ginn a few times were the highlights of this drill. They all looked solid, and like I've stated before, I think Ted Ginn is going to be something special....
Just noticing that the first string OL has changed today, and C. Liwienski is now playing LG instead of D. Mormino. The starting OL today consisted of LT Carey / LG Liwienski / C Satale / RG Handnot / RT Shelton.....
After the "hurry up drill", they switch things over to kick / punt return drills. Here we've got some guys running down the field, and guys like Ginn / Booker / Az-Hakim trying to make a play and return the ball....
Ted Ginn just juked a couple of guys right out of their shoes!!! Awesome!!! Ginn as a return spcialist is going to be so much fun to watch this year. He's like another D. Hall in my opinion, and even better, he can play WR without a doubt. Can't wait to see Ginn in action! I'm loving this pick now....
Hakim / Booker also fared decently while getting their chances to return. Both have very solid speed / quickness. Not quite like Ginn, but solid none the less....
The OL is back over working on their leverage drills, and getting ready for some real work. The DL is kind of just standing around at the moment...
The QB's are over on the opposite field working on taking shotgun snaps / formations. Not much to see here with the QB's as everyone is focused on the punt return drills with Ginn being the main attraction....
Now the QB's are sorking on some "rollouts", and throwing the ball out to the sideline. No big deal here really, just another drill used to get the QB's familiar with trying to move out of the pocket when the pressure is coming up the middle...
The next drill up is the goaline offense / defense. This drill was expected to be good, but in my opinion was very weak. All they did basically was call running plays from the 5 yard line over and over with the occational pass out into the corner of the endzone. All of the QB's got their chance under center, but since most of the plays were runs, it was rather boring....
If they run this drill once training camp starts, and the pads are on it will be very fun to watch, but for now there is really no contact, and the players are just kind of sleeping through it if you know what I mean...
There was a nice pass by Lemon during this drill, and it was a perfectly thrown corner route catch by TE D. Martin. Green also threw a corner of the endzone TD to the TE when he was under center. In the meantime, I see the WR's over on the other side of the field running corner endzone routes, with ball coming over the shoulder. The coaches throwing passes to them, and there is no coverage. It's a rather simple warm-up drill....
Lemon also ran a bootleg for a TD during the goaline drills. He's got some decent wheels no doubt about it....
I think bothe Green / Lemon looked really solid running the goaline drill when they were asked to make a play throwing the ball. Both of them seemed to have little trouble connecting for a TD on their throws. I was impressed with both QB's today during this drill....
The run offense during the goaline drill could certainly use some work though. It's hard to judge really, but when I see no real holes opening up, it kind of scares me. Maybe once the pads go on, and the real contact starts, the OL will start to open up some running lanes. Time will tell....
After the goaline drill, they began to work on "short yardage drills". These were basically the offense lining up, and running QB sneaks, and up the gut plays to the FB. There was no contact, and really nothing major going on during this drill. Another one of those boring but necessary things they must practice in order to get comfortable....
J. Beck attemped to connect deep during this drill with Ginn, but he was unable to catch the ball going down the sideline. It was a nice throw, and Ginn probably should have caught it, but it fell incomplete. Nice try though..
While Hamdan was under center during the short yardage drill, he tried to sneak in a quick pass over the middle which was then picked by Crowder and run back....
After the short yardage drill they began the 7 on 7 drills. No OL or DL here, just DB's S's and LB's up against the WR's / TE / RB / FB...
Green - Complete for 5 to FB K. Eckel...
Green - Complete for 5 to Chambers over the middle...
Green - Complete for 5 to Brown, Short pass over the middle....
Green - INT. Tried to go to Chambers over in the corner of the endzone, and Allen was there to make the pick. It was a solid attempt by Green, but an even better defensive play....
Green - About a 10 yard TD pass to TE J. Peele. Nice throw and catch....
------------------------------
Lemon - About a 20 yard TD strike to WR D. Hagan. This was a beautiful throw and catch. The nicest play of the day in my opinion thus far....
Lemon - 5 yard completion to the outside to RB J. Chapman....
Lemon - Another TD strike to D. Hagan. He made a circus catch on this play in the back of the endzone. He had to go way up for it, and when he came down he landed on his side. He was slightly slow getting up after that catch, but did return to the lineup right away after he shook it off some. He got a huge applause from the crowd, and some high fives in the huddle after that one. Hagan is having an excellent camp thus far....
Lemon - 5 yard gain to FB R. Mauia. He's got solid hands for a guy who looks more like a blocking FB. I really like this kid so far, and he's shown great work ethic in my opinion. He plays extremely hard....
Lemon - 5 yard TD throw to TE J. Rader. No big deal on this one really....
--------------------------------
Beck - Short 5 yard completion to RB R. Perkins. No big deal....
Beck - Back of the endzone throw to WR D. Hagan was broken up at the last second, bobbled, and fell incomplete. Good throw, just too good of coverage to squeeze it in there....
Beck - Dropped 7 yard quick slant. Malone on the would be recieving end...
Beck - TD over the DB to WR K. Campbell. This was a very nicely thrown ball the dropped in over the DB and right into Campbell's hands. I sure hope to see more of this in the future from Beck because that was an awesome pass....
Hamdan was up next, but considering that he's probably not even going to make this team I figured why bother reporting anything when he's taking only a few snaps a sesssion....
After Hamdan ran about three plays, they then ran the "2 minute drill". This was the offense vs defense, and although there is no real contact, they try hard to make it physical without hurting anyone. Other than when TC starts, this is the best time to get a true feeling of how strong both sides are in my opinion....
They started off with Lemon, and he went 4 and out. The OL was doing a very decent job in protection, but he just couldn't find anyone open. He once tried to throw it deep down the sidelines, but there wasn't anyone there. He really struggled during this final drill of the day....
Beck didn't fare much better, but he did complete one pass during his four downs. It was yet another unimpressive preformance once the two sides square off head to head. The defense, as usual is well ahead of the offense....
Hamdan actually was the only QB who was able to take the offense down the field in position to kick a FG. Feely made the best of it, and drilled about what looked like a 30 yard kick....
That closed out the Sunday session, and it pissed me off because Green never got an opportunity during the "2 minute drill". Oh well, hope you all enjoyed my final mini-camp report. Next up is "Training Camp", and I can't wait for some real action to report. Thanks.........
PHINZ RULE!!!!
