Watching the Jaguars game, I was really pleased with our "starters", and to a certain degree, many of our backups (particularly on offense). However, two plays really bother me. In both, a Dolphins safety blitzed very effectively, had a sure sack, and somehow, did not get it. I am referring to Renaldo Hill and Deke Cooper. In Hill's case, he was in the QB's face, and it looked as if he gave up on the play, almost like it was too easy. He just sort of assumed that Garrard was down, so he didn't give much of a tackle. The result was the QB just sliding out of the pocket and getting rid of the ball. It would have pinned them deep in their own territory. Again, I realize it is early and I do like what I see from Hill in general, but this is a play that just must be made. Especially considering Saban's desire to blitz the safety regularly, just as Yeremiah Bell did much of last season. The second play was even worse, when Deke Cooper also had Garrard for a big sack, only to hesitate for just a split second and the result was the big TD for Jones-Drew.
Just needed to know if these two plays drove anybody else crazy, despite it being just a meaningless game. I guess it is because blitzing is something that safeties in our system must do well. Hopefully Kirby Smart addresses this. You just have to be relentless in your pursuit when blitzing. Get the guy on the ground.
