It's actually not that bad. From my experience it never really hindered performance, just caused a good bit of discomfort, unless taped properly. Now if it is of the stress fracture type, you do run the risk of an actual break do to the repeated pounding.

Keep in ming this is just one study on this type of injury, but it covers it fairly well. I figured I would search for a medical explanation to go along with my person experience with it and the doctors I talked to.
As a side note, when reading through this article, I happened to have high arches during my youth. They have dropped some, but are still higher than normal.
