I just looked up Fields stats from this and last year, and this is what they look like(stats from NFL.com):

Brandon Fields Avg.: 43.8 Net Avg: 35.8

Now a probowl punter, Shane Lechler's career averages:

Avg: 46.7 Net Avg: 37.7

Not too much of a big difference. I haven't seen any big mistakes since that 8 yard ount. I would say keep Fields for a cheap price and work on our ST coverage.

because when he punts he shanks to many he has a good leg and sometimes it really kills us when he shanks it. maybe if he was consistent it wouldnt be so bad but man you never know if its going over 50 yards or 20. i just wish we kept donnie jones i really liked him.

I've never had any issues with him. Players aren't going to be perfect and things happen, but you just have to limit those mistakes. A three yard net difference from Lechler is remarkable.

I didn't realize his stats were that good/weren't so bad until a few days ago when somebody posted something similar. I don't know I guess it is just because the bad sticks out more than the good and he seemed to shank them at the most inopportune time. I think he’s done a decent job so far this year.

Do you have his average hang time, however? Alot of people contend that hang time is vital to a coverage unit being able to get to the ball.

If Bill thinks highly of Brandon (and he does), then so do I. I agree the net average between him and Shane Lechler is astounding. Lechler is the best damn punter in the NFL. Oh, I'm going to really enjoy the day when Brandon Fields actually has a coverage unit that can do it's damn job.

as bad as our coverage has been he needs to be concentrating on hang time

From what I've seen, the coverage unit is there....It's doing that whole "tackleing" thing that seems to be so elusive. The ST play in the Seattle game was simply one of the worst displays of unit discipline and tackleing that I've ever seen in 35 years of playing and watching football. East Carteret Mariner High School football had more disciplined Special Teams.

I am going to be searching for that. Has me interested :p. However I did find this one cool note from usatoday:

—P Brandon Fields will focus on improving his hang time this week because it has been a factor in some of the long punt returns against Miami this season. Fields has drastically improved his directional punting as indicated by his 15 boots inside the oppositions' 20-yard line. He had 10 all of last season.

Edit:
Isn't in the same league with Lecher there, sadly. Lechler has 22 so far. However Lechler is also having one of his best, if not best statistical seasons yet.

Edited again:

Another interesting fact. Lechler has the same amount of TD allowed on his punts in his career as Fields does. There is a big difference in experience between the two. Really shows how bad our ST is.

Hang time is of course an issue with every unit. IN the Seattle game, one of the long returns saw THREE...THREE Dolphins players nearly shoulder to shoulder in front of the returner. One move, and, *pfft* there goes the coverage. On another play I counted three missed tackles. That's not Field's fault.

those stats are misleading. this year Fields ranks 31st in Net average. only bette then 6 other regular punters.

Fields Net this year is 34.4. Lechlars is 41.7

Lechler is also having just about his best season. His average season is much closer statistically to Fields.

btw, Lechlers career net average is 40.7. not 37.7. and has not been under 40.0 net since 2003. Fields is no where near lechler.
