Punting can be the type of thing taken for granted, but field position is such an integral part of the game. Anyhow, Fields certainly has impressed thus far in rookie camp, and turned into one of the very pleasant suprises(at least to me). Let's hope he keeps it up.

Hopefully we wont need him as much this year ;)

Agreed. He has gotten real good reviews in most reports.

Apparently, the "competition" between he and Flynn was a short one, to say the least.

yea there are somewhat high expectations especially having a punter like Jones from last year.

so what youre all saying is fields is pretty much a lock for this position over flynn?? If so, thats good news I think, fields has one heck of a boomer of a leg.

I would say its early to call it a "lock", but it appears he is in the lead for the position by a fairly wide margin.

He's got the leg to boot you out of some tough spots but I don't know if he's got the game control to boot it inside the 20, which was something Donnie Jones excelled at. We'll see. I suspect that as a rookie he'll be a little less than mediocre.

By the way since we're talking special teams, can anyone think of a reason NOT to have Ted Ginn Jr. train to become the holder for Jay Feely? Ginn is a former quarterback, and he never fumbled once in college so the guy knows how to judge a ball and keep it secure, he's got natural hands for the ball and everything.

I just think that any team that sees Ted Ginn as the holder is going to have to really respect the possibility of a fake on every single kick because if it is a fake and you're sleeping on it, that's not a field goal...that's a damn touchdown.

I like your thinking, very bold.

Great, so people can complain that we used the 9th overall pick on a holder!

 Just playing CK.

Cool idea.

The only possible drawback I see is the slight risk of him getting injured while holding, which would seem silly afterward - first rounder injured on a ST play! But that could happen on any play. I think that the rewards far outweigh any risk here, I like the idea of other teams being worried about what we are going to do to them!

I LOVE IT.

Heh, I like it!

It also keeps the defense from really bringing it and going after blocks since you'd have to account for him at least a little.

Injury is the only real problem I see. You're pretty exposed as a holder and someone could roll up on you or give you a cheap shot, not that you see it happen much. I guess mentally, too, as a WR you might not want someone kicking near your precious hands.
