Could he be a cap casualty?

Year Base S. Bonus Misc. Cap Hit Dead
2012 700,000 689,000 10,000 1,399,000 -
2013 1,100,000 395,000 150,000 1,645,000 1,930,000
2014 3,041,116 395,000 150,000 3,586,116 1,185,000
2015 3,358,000 395,000 150,000 3,903,000 790,000
2016 3,525,000 395,000 150,000 4,070,000 395,000

He will cost just under $3.6m this year and $4m each of the next two. I know he is good, but that's a lot of money for a punter. If Miami cuts him this year it would be a cap hit of $1.185m, but a savings of $10.3m over the next three years.

My feelings is I like the guy a lot, but not punter is worth that kind of coin...

Erm no. (and not just because im a big fields fan.)

A. He is the best punter in the NFL and deserves to be paid like it
B. He gives us a significant boost with field position

If we were over the salary cap and trying to keep Tannehill you consider this sort of thing, not when your 40 million in the black

Not yet. If he punts next year like he did the last two weeks of the year, however, I would cut him in 15.

Fields?

Mr. MVP?

You want to cut the team MVP?

That guy bails is out of **** field position on the daily.

Worth every penny.

I like Fields and he has been by far Miami's most consistant player ovre the last three years, but not sure any punter is worth that kind of money especially if it means I could fill a need with that kind of money.

You only cut a good player if you absolutely need to. This idea that we need to look at our roster every off season and cut every player who might be slightly overpaid is a bad way to run a team. We have over $34 million of cap space, so lets use it. Guys like Fields, Wallace, and Patterson might be overpaid, but our team gets worse if we release any of them (none of them will be taking voluntary pay cuts).

You can fill whatever need you are talking about without Brandon Field's money. We have $34 million in cap space.

I dispute that his figure is even an issue. I don't know how many times he has cost the opposition points when he has turned around an awful dolphins field position by thumping it to the other end of the pitch. Punting (when performed at the level Fields does it) is important. Fields is as good as it gets and his pay reflects that. He is paid 2. something million, its not like he is on 4 million a year or something daft.

You don't get better as a team by letting the players who preform best leave.

Fields has consistently been this team's MVP. Why cut him if you have plenty of cap space?
