After noticing that the coaching staff moved Brandon Frye into the starting lineup when Donald Thomas got hurt I was curious to read more about him. He was put in the starting lineup ahead of two players who started games last year, Alleman and Ndukwe, and ahead of our 4th Rd pick from a year ago, Murphy, so they must see something in him. His background is very similar to Donald Thomas's. He is a workout warrior (albeit even stronger than Thomas) with very little experience playing OL........

Brandon Frye, OL
  • Height: 6-4
  • Weight: 301
  • 40 Time: 5.08
  • Vertical: 32.5
  • Shuttle: 4.4
  • 3-Cone: 7.5
  • Bench Reps: 34
Originally a defensive end at Virginia Tech, Frye moved to the offensive line while redshirting in 2002. He worked as a backup tackle until late in the 2005 season, when he was forced into the starting lineup due to injury in the Gator Bowl. He maintained the starting left tackle job as a senior in 2006 but was injured throughout most of his senior campaign.

While at Virginia Tech, Frye was consistently a standout in the weight room. He posted the top 40 time at his position as both a freshman and sophomore and was consistently one of the most impressive lifters on the team, setting a position record with a 705-pound squat. He bench pressed 34 reps of 225 lbs. and posted a 5.08-second 40 time at the NFL Scouting Combine in Feb. 2007.

Frye was drafted in the 5th round by the Texans in 2007 and played in 7 games for the Dolphins last year after we picked him up from the Texans practice squad mid year. Everything you read is that he needs more polish/practice playing on the OL but he is a great athlete for the position.

This guy sounds like an 'acorn' the Dolphins may be high on......

Thanks for the information......If he can make us forget about the wasted pick in murphy.....I'm all for it and good luck and I hope he can hold down the position for the next 5-8 years. GIVE UP YOUR SCHOLARSHIP " WASTED PICK MURPHY!!!! The scoput that brought his information to the trifecta should beat-up and fired.

from what i saw last year... i really liked what Ndukwe brought to the table

i didn't notice frye as much, but ndukwe made some legendary one on one blocks against the likes of vince wilfork and richard seymour last year... he also got beat a few times, i guess his biggest problem is consistency but i definitely saw flashes of talent

The lasting impression of Ndukwe that I got is watching Ravens NT Halati Ngata throw Ndukwe to the ground like Ndukwe weighed just 100 pounds. Ndukwe and Satele were both abused like rented mules when facing Ngata

I wonder what Frye's current weight is. The 305 pounds he is listed at is what he weighed 3 years ago so I'm sure he isn't the same weight now

Yeah, I find it stupid how Ndukwe is forgotten about. KC Joyner had RG Ndukwe with a better percentage metrics score than Vernon Carey, Satele and the LG in their blocking assignments last year.

Ndukwe was in the mid 80's in his metric score which a very good score and above average for an NFL guard.. KC Joyner had the crappy Andy Alleman at a terrible 72%, and Satele in the 70's as well (both below average).. Ndukwe is a very solid RG. It is a shame that dolphin fans didn't see what they got last year. If you look at the interior line play, it was Alleman and Satele getting smacked around consistently not being able to create any push, it wasn't Ndukwe.

Jake Grove had a 92% blocking rate last season which was 2nd in the league for centers behind Nick Mangold (who had a 94% metric).. If Grove can really solidify the center position, then really we just need to hope Smiley is 100% (as his metric score for the games he played was around the same as Ndukwe's), or hope the best for someone else there (Thomas etc) to have a very good offensive line.,

that's what i was saying... he could do the nicest blocks like he could be manhandled like a pee-wee ... but i noticed more good plays than bad ones (i'm not saying it's a statistic, just a perception...) . if he can be more consistent he could be a very good starter in the nfl, but right now he's an average starter who qualifies as an excellent backup Olinemen (remember, he can back up RG, LG and RT spots ) and he very well may be (along with frye and alleman) the reason(s) why we didn't draft interior linemen in this draft for depth... because we have those guys

Ndukwe needs to develop more of an attitude and play more physical. A guy as big as Ndukwe should not be getting ragdolled as often as he does.

For as big as he is, Ndukwe sure got pushed around quite a bit, especially by the Ravens. The one play against Ngata was particularly surprising.

Regardless of our opinions, the Dolphins coaching staff has moved Frye to first team, it will be interesting to see how he does. It appears as though the physical tools are all there.

Like I said, I would be curious to know what weight Frye is at now. He certainly appears to have the strength and mobility desired. Maybe he'll blossom under our new O-Line Coach??

You have no numbers to back it up. So stop making things up. I just saw every game from last year on NFL Rewind and focused on the line, your quote is BS.

The Dolphins only gave up around 25 sacks last year, despite having a crappy LG and a crappy center last season (the metric scores don't lie).. And Ndukwe played better than Carey last season (and Carey just got a $40 Million contract).

And Ndukwe was a big reason why the Dolphins ran better to the right last season. Haloti Ngata is an all pro (or he damn well should be with his dominance on the field) and the best NT in the league. His talent and strength is crazy, he does that to any O-line in the league (did the same against Pitt's O-line) and Ngata is the best player on that #2 ranked D last season.

A lot of people forget that it was Ndukwe's first full season last year, and he did quite well and above average when you see his stats around the league for RG's. He did better in metrics than any RG in our division (even better than the Jets RG even though the Jets were the only team to had metrics of all 5 on their line of 85% or more which was the best in the NFL).

its May so lets not be burying guys yet

I am not Murphys agent but I don't like giving up on any second year player. he should get one more TC with the new coach to prove himself

my guess is that he is not as smart as an OL needs to be.

I don't know what games you watched but Ndukwe was not very impressive. Why do you think Brandon Frye was getting all the first team reps in the OTAs?? The coaching staff must feel the same way. Ndukwe for the most part is just a big body. He is not very mobile or physical. He's the classic "phone booth blocker" and doesn't have the feet to be out in space or out of a phone booth area.
