I've been looking at a bunch of mock drafts and thinking about the many needs this team has. Based on the history of this FO they probably won't go WR in the first, and there most likely will not be any worthy NT's available when we pick in the first. So that leaves LB as the probable pick in the first. To me Spikes, from Florida makes a lot of sense. The guy looks to be a beast against the run at the ILB position, and he can't be any worse than the chumps we have now covering RB's and TE's.

Spikes looks like Channing Crowder Jr. far too many tackles 5+ yards down the field instead of at or near the line of scrimmage.

There's no reason to draft him in the 1st round, and either Dan Williams or Terrence Cody will be available at pick 12, so there will be a NT on the board and we'll likely pick one of them. The NT possibilities greatly diminish after those two.

the crowder/spikes comparisons are fugging clown shoes - especially since there's never any reasoning behind them that make any sense. crowder was and is a good overall player who was solid but unspectacular - and that landed him in the 3rd round. spikes is an elite talent who excels at rushing the passer, playing the run, and dropping back in coverage - and that's why we're talking about him for our first rounder. it's all there. he brings a new dimension to the 3-4 b/c we could move him around at LB so he could be a threat to rush the QB or drop back - then we might actually get creative with our defense - which just wasn't there last year. not to mention his prototypical 3-4 size and strength - he played in a 3-3-5 last year - so he more than fits into our system. he's still my choice in round 1. both him and mcclain are can't miss.

If anyone wants to compare Spikes to Crowder, I think no matter how they feel, they have to mention that Spikes and Crowder are worlds apart in coverage. Well, at least in my opinion, Spikes is far and above better in coverage than Crowder.
