BREAKDOWN: How landscape has changed in AFC East

By Harvey Fialkov | South Florida Sun Sentinel 5:39 PM EDT, March 11, 2009 While the Dolphins have barely dipped a toe into the free-agent pool, the rest of the AFC East dove in headfirst.

Sure, the Dolphins didn't make a huge splash like the Bills did last week with the signing of diva receiver Terrell Owens, but they did secure the future of five solid starters, including three of their own, without breaking the bank.

we have the second best QB in the division

if we can run the ball between the tackles, I say screw the landscape

The Jets have no QB and lost a lot of key players, and the Bills only signed one key FA. I don't see either of those teams being better than they were last year. The Pats however, have added some depth, have a lot of draft picks, and have the returning Tom Brady back. I think the Pats are the only team who may be better next year.

Rex Ryan has pretty much taken over a talented team and now has the guys set up to be like the Dave Wannstedt led Miami Dolphins, and yes, I just went there.

Good article, seems to be spot on. The only real question is will Brady come back and play the way he did before the knee injury or not. If the knee goes out on him again the Pats are screwed.........

Who knows how Brady will play once he gets back on the field, or even if he is able to get back on the field for opening day...

lets all hope and pray the jets dont get a qb.. other than that they have a roster something short of a pro bowl team.. but without that qb i dont see them being any better than 8-8

baltimore didnt exactly have a lights out QB, just someone who can manage the game. you know he will get the most out of that defense too. jets are the most improved at this point in the division.

Scary to remember those days. Truthfully, I think you might be on to something with your assessment of Ryan. It's one of the reasons I think defensive minded coaches often struggle in the league because they develope tunnel-vision on the defensive side of the ball, often thinking a defense can carry the team. Sure, teams have won a championship with great defenses and poor offenses (Tampa Bay, Baltimore) but those defenses were just that: GREAT. Anybody think the addition of Scott, Leonard, and Shepard make that defense elite? I doubt it. They'll be good, but def. not elite. Ryan needs to address his offense more than his defense right now, especially with the "DRAMA KING's" retirement and Cole's departure in FA. The quarterback in particular is the position the Jets need to fix the most, but if Ryan follows "The Stache" he will look for a stopgap style player, succumb to the philosophy run-run-pass-punt, and hope his defense is good enough to carry the team.

The landscape has definitely changed. The additions of Springs and Bodden makes the Patriots the clear cut favorite in the division IMHO. Yes, Brady returning helps too, but I think the solid CB play will go even farther towards re-establishing them as the team to beat ... sad but I think it is true. :(

The Jets have talent, yes, but they overpaid in FA and I don't think their talent level has improved all that significantly. I have faith that their new coach will be an improvement, but despite their many shiny parts, they lack some vital elements and I don't expect them to challenge for the division title.

The Bills have a good young team, and adding a marquee receiver like Owens will make Trent Edwards a candidate for most improved player I think. There certainly is room to disagree about Edwards, but I expect a much improved Bills team next season. I still don't see them challenging the Patriots for the division lead though.

So, I put us currently in the #2 slot ahead of the Jets and Bills and behind the Patriots. Hopefully, this changes after the draft and further moves in FA ... but I can see us improving as a team and only going 9-7; but I hope we duplicate last season's record. :D

Agreed about Pennington being the 2nd best QB in the division. Hoever, he has never had back to back good seasons. We'll see I guess.

look last year the fins was overrated by the media pundants, this is 2nd year of improvement, they should be fine, there is no reason to take a step backwards because of a tougher schedule because they know how to compete as a complete football team.

I am not to concerned about the Bills. Hardy could turn out to be a good WR for them but is young. TO is a one year player for them and that will be all. He won't hang around next year. After hearing how Buffalo just gave TO #81 and didn't let the players work that out between themselves the TO drama has already started. Saw there will be a TO reality show this year following him on his life outside of football. He will tear what chemistry they had up and leave the scraps behind when he leaves for another team in 2010.
