Breaking News: Marlins-City of Miami-MLB reach Stadium deal

Making the stadium much more difficult to access for fans in Broward is a really stupid idea, but hey. **** the Marlins, get that dirt infield out of my stadium.

They're putting the stadium at the site of the old OB. I imagine the Marlins are going to tear down a bit of the ghetto to put a parking lot...

it sucks that it's only going to seat 37,000. but i'm thrilled, we get to keep the marlins and the dolphins don't have the infield dirt. also, i love that it's at the old OB. (i know i'm probably alone with that one)

Assuming this is true....why waste the $$$? The Marlins' owner and upper management have absolutely no interest in satisfying their fans.Year in and year out,it seems they develop their talent base, only to trade them away. The Willis and Cabrera deals with Detroit, just solidifies this fact. And then bring in aging vets(like Gonzalez) to fill the holes, until younger talent comes along.Even though I'm a Cubbies fan,I do like the Marlins, and I feel really bad for their fans. The only positive to come of this,is that we('Fins)can finally get rid of the baseball field.Just my thoughts.

The Marlins can barely draw 10,000 fans to games. I think a 37,000 seat stadium is ideal for them and a smart choice. At least they have a chance to be able to sell out games.

If fans would come to the games, then the Marlins would have the money to have a payroll above the league minimum, and we wouldn't have to trade away our homegrown stars.

I suppose a Cubs fan can't really understand the concept of people not going to a baseball game, though.

If people in Palm Beach can come to Dolphins games, there's no reason us Broward residents can't go to the Orange Bowl site for Marlins games. I try to make it to 3-4 games a year, and don't see this changing even with the move.

If I were a Florida taxpayer, I'd be furious with this. Let's see, $410M to build a ballpark for a team that can't seem to draw flies and that has spent the vast majority of its relatively brief existence slashing costs. Essentially, it's corporate welfare for a corporation that hasn't been real successful, nor contributes significantly to the community in any meaningful financial or cultural manner. If the Marlins were to move to Northern Virginia, or Portland, or San Antonio, about 40 people would care, most of whom frequent this board. (No offense, guys.)

The Marlins are a boil on the buttocks of MLB, and now they're a boil on the buttocks of the Florida taxpayer.

Happily, I live in the People's Republic of New York (where wasteful government spending is such a way of life that it's like water off a duck's back), so I'm just glad we won't have that awful dirt infield screwing things up anymore.

The new agreement does not count on state dollars.

That's good because the Rays are seeking about $60 million in state money to pay for their proposed waterfront stadium.

So now a new stadium can be empty to watch the Marlins sell off players.

this is a great day for marlins fans...and as i recall...they had about 17,000 fans at fanfest recently...and im not even going to get into the people with jabs at the attendence or how bad of an owner loria...because they dont have the slightest clue as to what they are talking about

They have a point when bashing Loria, but not for what he's doing with the Marlins. It's really not his fault that people would rather stay at home than come to a ball game.

I think setting up shop at the site of the Orange Bowl will help to draw crowds, since it's closer to the Hispanic sections of Miami. Question is, will they come? Ticket prices shouldn't be an obstacle, as you can get very good seats for $30. So it's a matter of inclination.

I wonder what this means for the dump that is the area surrounding the Orange Bowl site. Eminent Domain, anyone?

my point is that he shouldnt be bashed for having a low payroll...i mean...alot of the money in this deal is coming from his pocket and lets face it, he isnt the wealthiest owner in the sport...but he and his team managed to broker a deal and should be commended for it...

im not sure the location helps attendence from the latino part of the city, in just that having a new stadium, with guarenteed baseball everynight and not having to sit through thunderstorms and 95 degree heat will be the big draw, with of course the chance to see hanley ramirez, maybin, coughlan, miller, west, volstad, etc. while they are in their prime...
