Dolphins fans that have long moved past the Nick Saban era get a chance this week to relive the Nicktator's single worst decision running Miami's franchise. (Yep, even worse than interviewing with Mr. Florio.)

I'm referring to Saban's failure to land Drew Brees during the 2006 offseason. The Dolphins instead ended with Daunte Culpepper, Saban eventually landed in Alabama, with the John Beck/Cam Cameron combo platter arrived in Miami.

In advance of this Sunday's Saints-Dolphins game, a few excellent articles are out detailing what exactly happened four years ago.

All I have to read is him saying we doubted his abilities. Great he is going to be hell bent on throwing for 450yds and 6tds! :err:

WE DIDN't have the CAP ROOM. Saban and Mueller exhausted thier efforts to get him, it wasn't meant to be your igonorant sobs.

According to Armando with the Miami Herald, Brees didn't like the long 6 hour physical we made him take to test his injured shoulder and, like most NFL players, he wanted the bigger contract that the Saints offered him. We could have offered him a bigger contract and just didn't.

At the end of the day, Saban just chickened out because of Brees' throwing arm. Sometimes it's a crap shoot with shoulder injuries. Sometimes you win, sometimes you crap out. Brees lucked out with his shoulder recovery and apparently Chad Pennington didn't. Pennington is on his 3rd major shoulder injury. I guess the Saints were better riverboat gamblers than us back then. Who knows though ... Chad Henne could really be the "next Marino" we've all been waiting for. You never know when you're going to be dealt a really good hand.

You know...I just don't buy that. If you want someone bad enough, there is a way to get around the "cap" to get him. I have watched the freakin' Jets sign EVERYONE in the world they wanted for the last two years (C. Pace, Favre, Bart Scott and others) and I am STILL wondering when they are going to run out of money. Now they are paying B. Edwards as well.

If it wasn`t for the old regimes we wouldn`t have the FO and coaching staff we have now. I love the direction we`re going and the discipline they have to stay the course.

Definitely. We now how a competent regime that, even when Parcells leaves, we'll be set for many years with Sparano and Ireland. Though I doubt they would have made the huge mistake of passing on Brees, you need to remember that he started out as a terrible QB over in San Diego and was only decent his last year or two there... people seem to forget that.

The sad part is apparently Saban thought Culpepper would be the right choice after tearing THREE ligaments in his knee... Thank god those years are over though, I've moved on.

The Dolphins had a bigger interest in Brees than 30 other teams. This should be a non-issue. Besides that, our secondary is not the NFLs best. This is just prepping for a Monday story about the umpteen trillion yards he may rack up on us.
