Not by the numbers.

Here is how I see it.

Injury. Brees - Shoulder Culpepper - Knee. I have trouble beliveing that either will be 100% by the start of next season. But, Brees' shoulder injury doesn't scare me nearly as much. (yes I know the Pennington example) but the list of Knee injuries that never return to form is much larger.
Brees

QB Style. Brees - Pocket passer Culpepper - Scrambler. This is a personal pereference. But in my view, if you want to win games... THROW THE DAMN BALL! Look at the last 10 superbowl winners. All pocket passers. The only ones you can even make an argument for is Steve Young and John Elway. Both weren't running much at there superbowls....... in fact Young set the record for PASSING TD's in a superbowl (6). List off the leagues top QBs.. is Vick in there? McNabb once he started throwing to TO? You get Manning, Brady, Palmer?, Big Ben.... get the point. Just how I see it... and maybe that is growing up watching Marino, but I'd rather have a guy who hangs in the pocket and throws the ball.
Brees

Age - younger is better in my book.
Brees

Dolphin Offense - Brees, accurate short passes. Culpepper long ball.
Brees had a pass catching RB (in tomlinson), a great TE (Gates) and WR's who wouldn't take over a game but made a few big plays, and ran well after the catch. Is that me or is that the Dolphins RB - Brown (taken over Caddy and Cedric because of his hands?) TE - Mc'Mike (Big play TE) and WR's who don't kate over games rather make a few big plays now and then (Pagging Booker and Welker)
Culpepper likes to launch the ball deep. Chambers isn't Randy Moss. Don't get me wrong, I love Chambers, and would rather have him than Moss (yes I said it.) Moss is great at going deep.... the 9 rout. But have you ever said "What a great over the middle catch by Moss... I cant' believe he held on to that!" me either. Chambers doesn't go deep as well as Moss, know on does.... it's not even close, but he does do other things better. Culpepper used TE's as a dump off, and almost never hit his RB.
Brees.

I know it's mostly opinions, but it's just how I see it. And I think it's how Saban sees it also. I'm not saying I wouldn't take Culpepper, he is a great talent....... I'm just saying I'd rather have Brees. You take culpepper and place him against almost any other available QB on the same questions and Culpepper wins hands down. It's just that Brees is perfect, and should have been a Dolphin all those years ago.

Return to where you should have been, Where you belong Drew. Miami.

culpepper a scrambler?

How many scramblers throw for over 4,000 yards in a season?

think about it bud.

FYI Elway and Young both had the ability to "scramble", they both were not "pure pocket" passers Marino. I've seen a few Big ben games and he too runs out the pocket quite a bit. He did it in that big play to Hines Ward in the superbowl. Exactly something DC would do, not Bree's.

Stop comparing Vick to DC. Just because DC has the ability to run, and is pretty damn good at doing it, you dont see him do it 5-10 times a game like Vick. You totally killed your argument when you called DC a "scrambling qb" and compared him to vick.

Your better off going by the numbers, because DC passing numbers are very good, better then Bree's, who by your definition, is a "pocket qb".

Why dont you take 2 min. and go look at passing yards for past seasons. Bree's rarely comes close.
Oh, and DC is very accurate, and has good arm strength. His shoulder or throwing amr is not injured unlike Bree's. Nobody knows how well he will recover. Since DC doesn't rely soley on his legs, he'll still be as accurate, and have the same arm strength.

Nice work, icemac. You presented your opinions very well, along with the reasoning behind them.

jg718, he said they were both very good QBs, but these are his opinions and he is entitled to them. It's all good . . .

Culpepper is more of risk by far in my oppinion. Brad Johnson is the best qb on that team to start with. He has led the Vik's to the NFC championship one year and pulled them out of that hole that Culpepper put them in because he could'nt just chunk it up there dog without Randy. Culpepper has been injury prone and could'nt do his stupid arm roll thing without Randy. Brees by far is the best choice injured or not.

Yeah look at Culpeppers stats last year without Moss and the games that Randy missed while still at Minn. They aren't very good. As a matter of fact he just sucks without someone who can run, out jump, and just make a mediocre qb look great . Yeah Captain Pepper should be bagging groceries or pimpin out a boat without Moss. Oh and the wr's they had this year were really strong while Brad was in so talent wasn't the reason for Pepper struggling unless it was his own.

Brees

Shoulder Injuries for a QB are much more problematic than a knee injury......at best this is a draw.

Brees

Culpepper is not a true scrambler, he is a pocket passer that can also run, again, at best this is a draw also.

Brees

I'll give you this one, although the difference between 27 and 29 is not that big of a deal.

Dolphin Offense - Brees, accurate short passes. Culpepper long ball.

Culpepper, the Dolphin offense likes to throw the long ball.

Personally, I'll be happy with either one, but I hardly would call Brees a "perfect" quarterback, in fact, from the perspective of arm strength, size and mobility, Culpepper is clearly a superior quarterback. Drew Brees has some intangibles that come close to evening out the comparison, but the biggest factor may be the amount of guaranteed money Brees is seeking, versus Culpepper who through a trade is already under contract.

Thanks BlueFin -- you did all my typing for me.

I don't see why unless you don't like the truth. Brad is a SB champ and has led Minn to the NFC championship before. What has Culpepper done especially without Moss?

Either QB is an upgrade to that position, both are talented players.

One other small point - I wouldn't say picking up Pep's contract is a plus. Have you seen how backloaded that thing is? We would definitely have to restructure.

i have seen it mentioned on this site, dunno how much truth there is to it, but that culpepper was playing with an injured knee for weeks before he mcgaheed it vs the panthers
