Last year, opposing teams just put 8 men in the box, and kept Ronnie & Ricky in check.

That's because we only had one WR who could burn CBs deep (Ted Ginn), so opposing teams could afford to pull up one safety, and stack the box.

In his senior year, Brian Hartline averaged 23 yds/catch, and regularly burned CBs on long throws.

When I made that point last week, people said that he wouldn't be able to do that against NFL cornerbacks. Well, he did last night against in the preseason game vs Tampa.

While Brian Hartline isn't a true deep threat, he adds an extra dimension that Cam/Bess/Turner do not.

With Ted Ginn and Brian Hartline as our starting WRs, it will be harder for opposing teams to pull up a safety to stack 8 men in the box. This will allow the R&R Express to finally run free.

I'm not too sure you can go that far with the Brian Hartline comments. He did that against some second stringers. He seems like a steal for us, but I'm not about to say he's better than Camarillo and Bess after one pre season game. He'll need to prove himself during the season. I hope you are right, but right now I see it as wishful thinking.

I never said he was better than Cam or Bess.

I was addressing one particular aspect - the ability to burn CBs on a deep pass, and catch the ball in stride.

Brian Hartline has done it many many times.

I have never ever seen Cam/Bess/Turner do it, except on a totally blown coverage assignment.

Child please.

Ok, show me one video clip of Cam/Bess/Turner burning a CB on a deep pass, and catching the ball in stride.

Exclude situations with totally blown coverages (CB is nowhere to be seen), and exclude jump balls in traffic.

Go.

C'mon now I'm at work there are firewalls here. I can't go to YouTube. How many balls did Hartline catch at OSU last season?

Brian Hartline had 22 receptions at 23 yds/catch.

Which is my point: he was used as the deep threat, not as a possession receiver.

Brian Robiskie was used as the possession receiver.

That said, both Brian Hartline and Brian Robiskie had low numbers because they had a freshman QB who ran the ball, in a run-focused offense.

I just don't think he will be much of a deep threat. Maybe I am just used to seeing slow white receivers, but he really hasn't looked that fast to me.
I don't think he will be a terrible player, I just don't think he will be any more of a deep threat than cam or bess. Turner runs about as fast as i do though so Hartline has him beat.

As stupid as this initially sounded i took a minute to look at Hartline last night again on the replay (DVR). His seperation is good already, his hand fighting is NFL already, he runs really good routes (he put a nice double move on that long 54 yd pasds) and he seems to be able to catch the ball consistently. Then I started thinking why in the world did Penny go to him twice deep and again on that deep out? is it to put this kid on the map, let everyone see on film what he can do? And if its not that and Penny really likes to throw to this kid can he become our #1? What ever it is he will be considered a deep threat when we play Atlanta so if he draws any extra attention it can only help R&R, Ginny or the Faso...We shall see

Hartline is definitely a better deep threat that Bess. Hartline will have to show some things in real games before I rate him as highly as Bess (overall), but he's 10x the deep threat that Bess is.

I can see he is gonna be a darn good receiver...You watch that game over again and you see him put the moves on the DB's right off the line..Give hime time and teams will remember his name..I was shocked how fast he got downfield when Penny hit him..I think he is a upgrade over Bess and we have 5 darn good guys to throw too.

I don't understand the gushing about any WR. I don't know if I was watching a different game last night or perhaps pixels are slower on a 71 inch but Penny and Henne were left holding the football longer than intented on many occasions. Meaning: SEPARATION IS STILL INADEQUATE.

Bess is a good third reciever but that is all he will ever be. He doesn't have the size or speed to be a quality starting wide receiver, and I haven't been thrilled about the prospect of him being our #2 receiver all year because I think it could be our achilles heel (that and secondary if it doesn't play better than last night).

Hartline, on the other hand, showed that he has the potential to do the things that starting WR's should be able to do- go down the field and get the ball. That doesn't mean he is going to light the world on fire- he could completely flop and as it is he probably isn't going to be out of the bottom third in starting WR's in the league if he does start. But his potential is at least a bit exciting, which is more than I've been able to say about any receiver in a while.
